How to remove Heater Water Control Valve on 2005 Ford Explorer?

Removal & Installation


  1. Drain the engine coolant.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  3. Disconnect the vacuum hose and heater hose.

  4. Remove the retaining pins. Position the inner fender well access mat out of the way.

  5. Disconnect the heater hose. Remove the bolt and the heater water control valve assembly.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2. Lubricate the coolant hoses with appropriate coolant, or plain water only, if needed.

2001-05 Explorer Sport/Sport-Trac



  1. Drain the engine coolant.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  3. Disconnect the vacuum hose and heater hose.

  5. Disconnect the heater hose. Remove the bolt and the heater water control valve assembly.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2. Lubricate the coolant hoses with MERPOL® meeting Ford specification ESE-M99B144-B or plain water only, if needed.

4.0L Engine
  1. Using suitable tools, clamp-off the heater hoses.

  2. Disconnect the heater hoses and the vacuum line.

  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4. Remove the bolt and remove the heater control valve.
    1. Tightening torque 10 ft lbs. (14 Nm)

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2. Clean and lubricate the coolant hoses with coolant hose lubricant or plain water only if needed.
  3. Top-off the engine cooling system.

4.6L Engine
  1. Using suitable tools, clamp-off the heater hoses.

  2. Disconnect the vacuum connector.
  3. Disconnect the heater hoses.
  4. Remove the heater control valve.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2. Clean and lubricate the coolant hoses with coolant hose lubricant or plain water only if needed.
  3. Top-off the engine cooling system

  1. Using suitable tools, clamp-off the heater hoses.

  2. Disconnect the heater hoses and the vacuum line.

  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4. Remove the bolt and remove the heater control valve. Tightening torque 10 ft lbs. (14 Nm)
