How to adjust valve lash on 2003 Ford Focus?

Valve Lash (Clearance) Adjustment

2.0L (VIN 3) Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the valve cover.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft so that the valve is closed and measure the clearance between the lifter shim and the camshaft base circle. Intake valve clearance should be 0.004-0.007 inches. Exhaust valve clearance should be 0.010-0.013 inches.
  4. Measure each valve and note the clearance.
  5. If adjustment is necessary, remove the camshafts and replace the shims. To obtain the correct shim size, measure the current shim, add the measured clearance, and subtract 0.006 inches for intake valves or 0.012 inches for exhaust valves.
  6. Install or connect the following:

2.0L (VIN 5) Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the valve cover.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft so that the valve is closed and measure the clearance between the lifter shim and the camshaft base circle. Intake valve clearance should be 0.008-0.0011 inches. Exhaust valve clearance should be 0.013-0.016 inches.
  4. Measure each valve and note the clearance.
  5. If adjustment is necessary, remove the camshafts and replace the shims. To obtain the correct shim size, measure the current shim, add the measured clearance, and subtract 0.009 inches for intake valves or 0.014 inches for exhaust valves.
  6. Install or connect the following:

    Camshafts
    Valve cover

2.0L (VIN N) & 2.3L (VIN Z) Engines

Exhaust valve clearance should be 0.010-0.013 inches.
  4. Measure each valve and note the clearance.
  5. If adjustment is necessary, remove the camshafts and replace the shims. To obtain the correct shim size, measure the current shim, add the measured clearance, and subtract 0.009 inches for intake valves or 0.011 inches for exhaust valves.
  6. Install or connect the following:

    Camshafts
    Valve cover
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the valve cover.
  3. Measure each valve's clearance at base circle, with the lobe pointed away from the tappet, before removing the camshafts.
    CAUTION
Failure to measure all clearances prior to removing the camshafts will necessitate repeated removal and installation and wasted labor time.
  4. Use a feeler gauge to measure each valve's clearance and record its location.
  5. Valve clearance should be:
    NOTE
The number on the valve tappet only reflects the digits that follow the decimal. For example, a tappet with the number 0.650 has the thickness of 3.650 mm.

    Intake: 0.008-0.0011 in. (0.22-0.28 mm)
    Exhaust: 0.010-0.013 in. (0.27-0.33 mm)
  6. Select tappets using this formula: tappet thickness = measured clearance + the base tappet thickness - most desirable thickness.
  7. Select the tappets and mark the installation location.
  8. If any tappets do not measure within specifications, install new tappets in these locations.
  9. Install the valve cover.

Valve Covers

Removal & Installation

2.3L (VIN Z) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

Camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector
Cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor boot
    CHT sensor electrical connector
    Coil-on-plug electrical connectors
    Ignition coils
Breather tube from the valve cover
Wiring harness retainers from the valve cover studs and position aside.
Fuel injection supply manifold wiring harness from the valve cover.
    Fuel injector electrical connectors
Fuel pressure regulator electrical connector and the vacuum hose.
    Upper HO2S electrical connector
Two wire connectors from the bracket
Bracket bolt and position it aside.

To install:

WARNING
Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

  1. Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
  2. Inspect the valve cover gaskets for damage. Install new gaskets if necessary.
  3. Install the valve cover and bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) in the sequence shown.
  4. Reposition the fuel injection supply wiring harness.
  5. Install the bracket and bolt.
  6. Install the two wire connectors on the bracket.
  7. Connect the upper HO2S electrical connector.
  8. Connect the fuel injector electrical connectors.
  9. Connect the fuel pressure regulator electrical connector and the vacuum hose.
  10. Install the wiring harness retainers on the valve cover studs.
  11. Install the breather tube on the valve cover.
  12. Install the coil-on-plug assemblies.
    NOTE
Push the coil assemblies down firmly until the boot seal has sealed the access hole.
  13. Install the coil assemblies.
  14. Install the coil assembly bolts.
  15. Connect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  16. Connect the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor electrical connector.
  17. Position the CHT boot.
  18. Connect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  19. Connect the battery ground cable.
