Valve Cover dis-assembly for Ford 5.0 Engine?

Valve Covers

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

5.0L Engines

NOTE
To remove the valve covers, the upper intake manifold must be removed. Obtain a new gasket for the intake assembly before removing it. If only the right-hand valve cover is to be removed, the intake manifold can remain on the engine, however, you will need to remove the throttle body assembly from the upper intake manifold.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.
  2. Drain the cooling system until the coolant level is below the intake manifold.
  3. Remove the upper intake manifold.
  4. Label and remove the spark plug wires from the coil packs.
  5. Detach the coil pack electrical connections and remove them from the engine.
  6. Remove any remaining wires or lines which will interfere with valve cover removal.
  7. Remove the valve cover hold-down bolts and remove the covers.
    NOTE
A gentle tap with a soft hammer may help to break the seal on the gasket.

    WARNING
Never pry between the valve cover and the cylinder head. Damage to the machined sealing surface, or distortion to the valve cover could occur, resulting in an oil leak.
To install:
  1. Clean all gasket mating surfaces. Install a new gasket to the cylinder head and position the cover on the engine.
    NOTE
Ensure that the stamping and chamfered edge of the steel carrier of the gasket are facing up when installed.

  2. Install all of the hold-down bolts and tighten in the sequence given.
    1. 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm)
  3. Connect all wires and lines disconnected from the engine.
  4. Install the coil packs and the spark plug wires to the coils.
  5. Install the upper intake manifold.
  6. Refill the cooling system.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature (upper radiator hose hot) and check for leaks.

    NOTE
To prevent stretching the valve cover gasket, loosen silicone gasket and sealant from the cylinder head by sliding a flat knife between the valve cover gasket and cylinder head.
  5. Loosen the bolts and stud bolts and remove the valve cover.
To install:

WARNING
Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

  1. Clean and inspect the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep and a plastic scraping tool. Follow the directions on the packaging.
  2. Inspect the valve cover gasket. If the gasket is damaged, remove and discard the gasket. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.
