How to remove HVAC housing on 2005 ford explorer?

Removal & Installation


NOTE
If an evaporator core leak is suspected, the evaporator core must be vacuum leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle.


NOTE
Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the air conditioning system, except when there is physical evidence of contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the accumulator.


NOTE
Lubricate the coolant hoses with plain water only if needed.

  1. Recover the refrigerant.
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove the instrument panel. See -Instrument Panel- under the -Body- section.
  4. Detach the wiring harness bracket (above the heater tube bracket) and position the harness aside.
  5. Remove the heater tube bracket nut.

  6. Remove the A/C line bracket nut at the dash panel.
  7. Disconnect the 2 heater hose clamps at the heater core.
  8. Disconnect the evaporator inlet fitting. Discard the O-ring seals.
  9. Disconnect the evaporator outlet fitting. Discard the O-ring seals.
  10. Disconnect the 2 vacuum connectors.

  11. Detach the grommet and push the vacuum lines into the passenger compartment.
  12. Remove the 4 HVAC housing nuts.
  13. Disconnect the ground terminal bolt.
  14. Remove the HVAC housing.

To install:

  1. Position the HVAC housing into the vehicle.
  2. Disconnect the ground terminal bolt.
  3. Install the HVAC housing nuts. Tighten the nuts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  4. Position the grommet and vacuum lines back into the dash panel.
  5. Connect the 2 vacuum connectors.
  6. Install new O-ring seals and connect the evaporator inlet and outlet fittings.
  7. Connect the heater hoses.
  8. Install the A/C line bracket nut at the dash panel.
  9. Install the heater tube bracket nut.
  10. Attach the wiring harness bracket (above the heater tube bracket)
  11. Install the instrument panel. See -Instrument Panel- under the -Body- section.
  12. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system.
  13. Refill the cooling system.
  14. Perform an A/C system leak test.
