How to adjust valve lash on 2003 Ford Focus?

Valve Lash (Clearance) Adjustment

2.0L (VIN 3) Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the valve cover.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft so that the valve is closed and measure the clearance between the lifter shim and the camshaft base circle. Intake valve clearance should be 0.004-0.007 inches. Exhaust valve clearance should be 0.010-0.013 inches.
  4. Measure each valve and note the clearance.
  5. If adjustment is necessary, remove the camshafts and replace the shims. To obtain the correct shim size, measure the current shim, add the measured clearance, and subtract 0.006 inches for intake valves or 0.012 inches for exhaust valves.
  6. Install or connect the following:

    Camshafts
    Valve cover

2.0L (VIN 5) Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the valve cover.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft so that the valve is closed and measure the clearance between the lifter shim and the camshaft base circle. Intake valve clearance should be 0.008-0.0011 inches. Exhaust valve clearance should be 0.013-0.016 inches.
  4. Measure each valve and note the clearance.
  5. If adjustment is necessary, remove the camshafts and replace the shims. To obtain the correct shim size, measure the current shim, add the measured clearance, and subtract 0.009 inches for intake valves or 0.014 inches for exhaust valves.
  6. Install or connect the following:

    Camshafts
    Valve cover

2.0L (VIN N) & 2.3L (VIN Z) Engines

Exhaust valve clearance should be 0.010-0.013 inches.
  4. Measure each valve and note the clearance.
  5. If adjustment is necessary, remove the camshafts and replace the shims. To obtain the correct shim size, measure the current shim, add the measured clearance, and subtract 0.009 inches for intake valves or 0.011 inches for exhaust valves.
  6. Install or connect the following:

    Camshafts
    Valve cover
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the valve cover.
  3. Measure each valve's clearance at base circle, with the lobe pointed away from the tappet, before removing the camshafts.
    CAUTION
Failure to measure all clearances prior to removing the camshafts will necessitate repeated removal and installation and wasted labor time.
  4. Use a feeler gauge to measure each valve's clearance and record its location.
  5. Valve clearance should be:
    NOTE
The number on the valve tappet only reflects the digits that follow the decimal. For example, a tappet with the number 0.650 has the thickness of 3.650 mm.

    Intake: 0.008-0.0011 in. (0.22-0.28 mm)
    Exhaust: 0.010-0.013 in. (0.27-0.33 mm)
  6. Select tappets using this formula: tappet thickness = measured clearance + the base tappet thickness - most desirable thickness.
  7. Select the tappets and mark the installation location.
  8. If any tappets do not measure within specifications, install new tappets in these locations.
  9. Install the valve cover.
