Oil Recommendations



Diesel Engines
Removal & Installation
2.0L (VIN 3) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Drain the engine oil.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Timing belt
    Oil pan
    Oil pump pickup tube
    Oil pump
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump. Tighten the bolts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
    Oil pump pickup tube. Tighten the fasteners to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    Oil pan
    Timing belt
    Negative battery cable
  2. Fill the crankcase to the correct level.
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
2.0L (VIN 5) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the timing belt.
  3. Remove the crankshaft timing pulley.
  4. Remove the thrust washer.
  5. Detach the air conditioning (A/C) compressor from the bracket and secure it on the radiator crossmember.
  6. Remove the A/C compressor bracket.
  7. Remove the intermediate shaft center bearing bracket.
  8. Remove the oil pan.
    CAUTION
    Note the location of any spacer shims between the transaxle and the lower crankcase to aid installation. The spacer shims must be installed in the same location during installation.
  9. Remove the oil pick-up tube.
  10. Remove the lower crankcase retaining bolts and the lower crankcase. Discard the gasket.
  11. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  12. Remove the oil pump. Discard the gasket.
To install:

NOTE
Install a new oil pump gasket

  1. Install the oil pump. Align the oil pump on both sides so that the mating face is between 0.3 mm- 0.8 mm above the lower edge of the cylinder block.
  2. Tighten the oil pump retaining bolts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  3. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner and tighten the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
    CAUTION
    Make sure that any spacer shims between the transaxle and the lower crankcase are installed in their original location.
  4. Install the lower crankcase with a new gasket. First, tighten the transaxle bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Then, tighten the rest of the lower crankcase bolts.
  5. Install the oil pump pick-up tube and tighten the bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6. Install the oil pan.
  7. Install the intermediate shaft center bearing bracket and tighten the fasteners to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8. Install the air conditioning (A/C) compressor bracket and tighten the fasteners to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  9. Attach the A/C compressor to the bracket and tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  10. Install the thrust washer and the crankshaft timing pulley.
  11. Install the timing belt.
2.0L (VIN P) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing belt
    Oil pan
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
    Oil pump pickup tube
    Oil pump
To install:
  1. Lubricate the crankshaft front oil seal lip with clean engine oil.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump. Tighten the bolts to 10-12 ft. lbs. (13-16 Nm).
    Oil pump pickup tube. Tighten the retaining bolts to 71-97 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
    CKP sensor
    Oil pan
    Timing belt
  3. Fill the crankcase to the correct level.
  4. Start the engine and check for leaks.
2.3L (VIN Z) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the engine from the vehicle and mount it on an engine stand.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan
    Oil pump pickup tube and screen
    Front cover and the timing chain
  4. Release the tension on the tensioner spring.
  5. Remove the tensioner and the shoulder bolt.
  6. Remove the guide.
    NOTE
    The oil pump chain sprocket must be held in place.
  7. Remove the following:

    Oil pump chain and sprockets
    Oil pump assembly and gasket
To install:

  1. Install the oil pump with a new gasket. Tighten the bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    2. Step 2: 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  2. Install the pump chain and sprockets. Tighten the pump sprocket bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  3. Install the chain guide, tensioner, and shoulder bolt. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4. Hook the tensioner spring around the shoulder bolt.
  5. Install the oil pump pickup tube and screen with a new gasket. Tighten the bolts to 89 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  6. Install the oil pan.
  7. Install the timing chain and front cover.
  8. Install the engine into the vehicle.
