Removal & Installation

NOTE

Although Ford suggests that this component is removable while the engine is installed in the vehicle, depending on the particular options with which your truck is equipped, working clearance may be extremely tight and this procedure may be much easier to perform with the engine removed. Before commencing, read through this procedure and make certain enough clearance, or working room, exists with the engine in the vehicle; if there is not enough space, the engine should be removed.

4.0L (VIN E) SOHC Engine

1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   NOTE

   The right-hand camshaft sprocket bolt uses left-hand threads.
   
   
   
   
   Negative battery cable for safety

   Valve cover

   Hydraulic camshaft tensioner
   
   
3. For the right-hand camshaft use the Cam Gear Torque Adapter tool T97T-6256-F, to remove the camshaft sprocket bolt.
4. For the left-hand camshaft, remove the sprocket bolt.
   
   NOTE

   When removing the followers, label them so that they may be returned to their original positions.
   
   
5. Using the Valve Spring Compressor tool ST1330-A, remove the camshaft roller followers.

6. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   Camshaft bearing cap bolts and the oil rail

   Camshaft
   
   

To install:

1. Lubricate all of the moving parts with SAE 50W engine oil.
2. Install camshaft onto the cylinder head.
3. Position the oil rail and install the bearing caps and bolts. Torque the bolts in 2 steps:
   1. Step 1-53.5 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
   2. Step 2-11-12.5 ft. lbs. (15-17 Nm).

   
   
4. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   Camshaft followers

   Camshaft sprocket bolt and hand tighten the bolt

   Camshaft Chain Tensioner T97T-6K254-A in the hole that the hydraulic chain tensioner was in
   
   
5. Turn the crankshaft one revolution clockwise until No. 1 piston is Top Dead Center (TDC).
6. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   Crankshaft Holding tool T97T-6303-A on the crankshaft to keep it from turning

   Position the timing slot on the rear of the camshaft to fit Camshaft Holding tool T97T-6256-C and install the holding tool on the rear of the head

   Camshaft Gear Holding tool T97T-6256-B and Camshaft Gear Holding tool T97T-6256-A on the front of the cylinder head to securely hold the camshaft gear

   Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
   
   
7. Remove the Camshaft Chain Tensioner tool and install the hydraulic chain tensioner, tighten the tensioner to 35-39 ft. lbs. (47-53 Nm).
8. Remove the special tools from the engine.
9. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   Valve cover

   Negative battery cable
   
   
10. Start the engine check for leaks and repair if necessary.

NOTE

You must carry out the RH and LH camshaft timing procedure when either camshaft is serviced. See -Timing Chain and Sprockets- section.

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the -Precautions- section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   Negative battery cable for safety

   Cooling fan

   Camshaft roller followers; see -Rocker Arms/Shafts (Camshaft Roller Followers)-

   A/C tube bracket (position tube aside)
   
   
3. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to position the number one cylinder at TDC.
   
   CAUTION

   Do not rotate the engine counterclockwise. Rotating the engine counterclockwise will result in incorrect timing of the engine.
   
   
4. Install the special clamping tool, 303-573, onto the crankshaft damper.

5. Install the special tools on the rear of the RH cylinder head and tighten the top 2 clamp bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
   
   CAUTION

   The RH camshaft sprocket is a LH threaded bolt.
   
   
6. Using the special tool and the Camshaft Sprocket Nut Socket, loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt.

7. Remove the RH sprocket bolt and position the camshaft sprocket and chain aside.
8. Install the special tools on the front of the LH camshaft and tighten the 2 top clamp bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)

9. Remove the LH camshaft sprocket bolt and position the sprocket and chain aside.
10. On both sides, remove the bolts in the sequence shown and remove the camshaft bearing caps and the oil supply tube.

11. Remove the camshaft.

To install:

1. Lubricate all of the moving parts with clean engine oil.
2. Install camshaft onto the cylinder head.
3. Install the camshaft bearing caps, in their original locations, and torque the bolts in 2 steps:
   1. Step 1-53.5 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
   2. Step 2-12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).

   
   
4. Install the camshaft oil supply tube.
5. Reposition the camshaft sprocket and chain, for each side, and loosely install the sprocket bolt.
   
   CAUTION

   The camshaft gear must turn freely on the camshaft. DO NOT tighten the bolt at this time.
   
   
6. Retime the camshafts. See the procedure in -Timing Chain and Sprocket- section.
7. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   Camshaft roller followers

   A/C tube and bracket

   Valve covers

   Cooling fan

   Negative battery cable
   
   
8. Start the engine check for proper operation and leaks. Repair if necessary.

4.0L Engines VIN X OHV

NOTE

It is necessary to replace the oil pan gasket when removing and installing the engine front cover. It will also be necessary to remove the transmission to properly reseal the oil pan.

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Drain the engine oil.
3. Drain the cooling system.
4. Evacuate the A/C system.
5. Relieve fuel system pressure.
6. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   Negative battery cable

   Radiator

   A/C compressor. Do not disconnect the lines

   A/C condenser

   Fan, spacer and shroud

   Air cleaner hoses

   Spark plug wires

   Ignition coil and bracket

   Crankshaft pulley and damper

   Oil pump drive

   Alternator

   Fuel lines at the supply manifold

   Upper and lower intake manifold

   Rocker arm covers

   Rocker arm shafts

   Pushrods and identify them for installation

   Tappets and identify them for installation

   Oil pan

   Engine front cover

   Water pump
   
   
7. Turn the engine by hand until the timing marks align at Top dead Center (TDC) of the power stroke on No.1 piston.
8. Place the timing chain tensioner in the retracted position and install the retaining clip.
9. Check the camshaft end-play. If excessive, you'll have to replace the thrust plate.
10. Remove the camshaft gear attaching bolt and washer, then slide the gear off the camshaft.
11. Remove the camshaft thrust plate.
12. Carefully slide the camshaft out of the engine block, using caution to avoid any damage to the camshaft bearings.

To install:

1. Lubricate the camshaft using a good assembly lubricant.
2. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   Camshaft using caution to avoid any damage to the camshaft bearings

   Thrust plate. Make sure that it covers the main oil gallery. Torque the screws to 84-120 inch lbs. (9-13 Nm).
   
   
3. Rotate the camshaft and crankshaft, as necessary, to align the timing marks.
   
   
   Camshaft gear and chain. Torque the bolt to 44-50 ft. lbs. (60-68 Nm).
   
   
4. Remove the clip from the chain tensioner
   
   
   Engine front cover and water pump

   Crankshaft damper/pulley. Torque the bolt to 33 ft. lbs. +90 degrees, for 1998, or 46-49 ft. lbs. +90 degrees for 1999-01.

   Oil pan
   
   
5. Coat the tappets with 50W engine oil and place them in their original locations.
6. Apply 50W engine oil to both ends of the pushrods. Install the pushrods in their original locations.
   
   
   Tappets

   Rocker arm shafts and covers

   Upper and lower intake manifolds

   Fuel lines to the fuel supply manifold

   Alternator and electrical connectors

   Oil pump drive

   Ignition coil and bracket

   Spark plug wires

   Air cleaner hoses

   Fan, spacer and shroud

   A/C condenser

   A/C compressor

   Radiator

   Negative battery cable
   
   
7. Fill the cooling system.
8. Recharge the A/C system.
9. Replace the oil filter and refill the engine with clean oil.
10. Start the engine and check the ignition timing and idle speed; adjust if necessary. Run the engine at fast idle and check for coolant, fuel, vacuum or oil leaks.

4.0L SOHC Engine

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   NOTE

   The right-hand camshaft sprocket bolt uses left-hand threads.
   
   
   
   
   Negative battery cable for safety

   Valve cover

   Hydraulic camshaft tensioner
   
   
3. For the right-hand camshaft use the Cam Gear Torque Adapter tool T97T-6256-F, to remove the camshaft sprocket bolt.
4. For the left-hand camshaft, remove the sprocket bolt.
   
   NOTE

8. Remove the special tools from the engine.
9. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   Valve cover

   Negative battery cable
   
   
10. Start the engine check for leaks and repair if necessary.
