Transaxle Removal & Installation
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Steering column shaft boltBattery and trayAir intake assemblyResonatorGearshift cables from the transaxleGearshift cables from the bracketHydraulic clutch line from retaining bracketHeated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) and Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) connections - Support the engine using Special Tools 303-290.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
NOTEMatchmark the subframe to the chassis.
Rear engine mount and mount bracketReverse lamp switchUpper transmission to engine boltsTire and wheelsEngine roll restrictorTie rods from the knucklesLower control arms from the wheel knucklesStabilizer bar from the strutPower steering lines from the steering gear - Support the subframe with a suitable lifting device.
- Remove the six subframe bolts and lower the subframe from the vehicle.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)Right hand halfshaft from the transmission and hang securely asideLeft hand halfshaft from the transmission and hang securely aside - Loosen, but do not remove, the starter mounting bolts
- Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line.
- Secure the transmission to a jack or suitable lifting device.
- Remove the 10 transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Pull the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the pressure plate, then lower the transmission from the vehicle.
To install:
- Lift the transmission into the vehicle.
- Tighten the transmission-to-engine bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
- Connect the clutch hydraulic line.
- Tighten the starter motor mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Install or connect the following:
Left hand halfshaftRight hand halfshaftVSSSubframe and tighten mounting bolts to 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)Power steering linesStabilizer bar to the strutLower control arms to the wheel knucklesTie rods to the knucklesEngine roll restrictorUpper transmission-to-engine bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)Reverse lamp switchRear engine mount bracket and tighten bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)Rear engine mount and tighten bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm). Tighten the center nut to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm). - Remove the engine support tools.
- Install or connect the following:
HO2S and CMS sensorsHydraulic clutch line to the retaining bracketGearshift cables to the bracketGearshift cables to the transaxleResonator and tighten bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm)Air intake assemblyBattery traySteering column shaft boltNegative battery cable - Fill the transmission to the correct level.
- Adjust the shift linkage if necessary.
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
2.0L (VIN N) & 2.3L (VIN Z) Models
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Negative battery cableSteering column shaft boltBattery trayAir intake assemblyResonatorGearshift cables from the transaxleGearshift cables from the bracketHydraulic clutch line from retaining bracketHeated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) and Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) connections - Support the engine using Special Tools 303-290.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
NOTEMatchmark the subframe to the chassis.
Rear engine mount and mount bracketReverse lamp switchUpper transmission to engine boltsTire and wheelsEngine roll restrictorTie rods from the knucklesLower control arms from the wheel knucklesStabilizer bar from the strutPower steering lines from the steering gear - Support the subframe with a suitable lifting device.
- Remove the six subframe bolts and lower the subframe from the vehicle.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)Right hand halfshaft from the transmission and hang securely asideLeft hand halfshaft from the transmission and hang securely aside - Loosen, but do not remove, the starter mounting bolts
- Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line.
- Secure the transmission to a jack or suitable lifting device.
- Remove the 10 transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Pull the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the pressure plate, then lower the transmission from the vehicle.
To install:
- Lift the transmission into the vehicle.
- Tighten the transmission-to-engine bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
- Connect the clutch hydraulic line.
- Tighten the starter motor mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Install or connect the following:
Left hand halfshaftRight hand halfshaftVSSSubframe and tighten mounting bolts to 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)Power steering linesStabilizer bar to the strutLower control arms to the wheel knucklesTie rods to the knucklesEngine roll restrictorUpper transmission-to-engine bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)Reverse lamp switchRear engine mount bracket and tighten bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)Rear engine mount and tighten bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm). Tighten the center nut to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm). - Remove the engine support tools.
- Install or connect the following:
HO2S and CMS sensorsHydraulic clutch line to the retaining bracketGearshift cables to the bracketGearshift cables to the transaxleResonator and tighten bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm)Air intake assemblyBattery traySteering column shaft boltNegative battery cable - Fill the transmission to the correct level.
- Adjust the shift linkage if necessary.
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
Except 2.0L (VIN N) & 2.3L (VIN Z) Models
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Attach a support fixture to the engine lifting eyes.
- Loosen the front strut center nuts 5 turns.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Battery and trayMass Air Flow (MAF) sensor connectorAir cleaner assemblyAir intake pipeClutch slave cylinder fluid lineShift cablesExhaust flex pipeEngine front mountLower ball jointsAxle halfshafts and intermediate shaftDrive belt coverReverse light switch connectorVehicle Speed (VSS) sensor connectorRear engine mount and bracketStarter motorTransaxle flange bolts. Support the transaxle.Transaxle
To install:
- Install or connect the following:
Transaxle. Tighten the flange bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).Starter motorRear engine mount bracket. Tighten the fastener to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).Rear engine mount. Tighten the outer nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) and the center nut to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm).VSS sensor connectorReverse light switch connectorDrive belt coverAxle halfshafts and intermediate shaftLower ball joints. Tighten the pinch bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).Right engine mount. Tighten the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).Exhaust flex pipeShift cablesClutch slave cylinder fluid lineAir intake pipeAir cleaner assemblyMAF sensor connectorBattery and tray - Tighten the strut center nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
