how to replace and install transaxle

Transaxle Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steering column shaft bolt
    Battery and tray
    Air intake assembly
    Resonator
    Gearshift cables from the transaxle
    Gearshift cables from the bracket
    Hydraulic clutch line from retaining bracket
    Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) and Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) connections
  3. Support the engine using Special Tools 303-290.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Matchmark the subframe to the chassis.



    Rear engine mount and mount bracket
    Reverse lamp switch
    Upper transmission to engine bolts
    Tire and wheels
    Engine roll restrictor
    Tie rods from the knuckles
    Lower control arms from the wheel knuckles
    Stabilizer bar from the strut
    Power steering lines from the steering gear
  5. Support the subframe with a suitable lifting device.
  6. Remove the six subframe bolts and lower the subframe from the vehicle.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
    Right hand halfshaft from the transmission and hang securely aside
    Left hand halfshaft from the transmission and hang securely aside
  8. Loosen, but do not remove, the starter mounting bolts
  9. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line.
  10. Secure the transmission to a jack or suitable lifting device.
  11. Remove the 10 transmission-to-engine bolts.
  12. Pull the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the pressure plate, then lower the transmission from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. Lift the transmission into the vehicle.
  2. Tighten the transmission-to-engine bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  3. Connect the clutch hydraulic line.
  4. Tighten the starter motor mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Left hand halfshaft
    Right hand halfshaft
    VSS
    Subframe and tighten mounting bolts to 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
    Power steering lines
    Stabilizer bar to the strut
    Lower control arms to the wheel knuckles
    Tie rods to the knuckles
    Engine roll restrictor
    Upper transmission-to-engine bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)
    Reverse lamp switch
    Rear engine mount bracket and tighten bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
    Rear engine mount and tighten bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm). Tighten the center nut to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm).
  6. Remove the engine support tools.
  7. Install or connect the following:

    HO2S and CMS sensors
    Hydraulic clutch line to the retaining bracket
    Gearshift cables to the bracket
    Gearshift cables to the transaxle
    Resonator and tighten bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm)
    Air intake assembly
    Battery tray
    Steering column shaft bolt
    Negative battery cable
  8. Fill the transmission to the correct level.
  9. Adjust the shift linkage if necessary.
  10. Start the engine and check for leaks.

2.0L (VIN N) & 2.3L (VIN Z) Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Steering column shaft bolt
    Battery tray
    Air intake assembly
    Resonator
    Gearshift cables from the transaxle
    Gearshift cables from the bracket
    Hydraulic clutch line from retaining bracket
    Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) and Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) connections
  3. Support the engine using Special Tools 303-290.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Matchmark the subframe to the chassis.



    Rear engine mount and mount bracket
    Reverse lamp switch
    Upper transmission to engine bolts
    Tire and wheels
    Engine roll restrictor
    Tie rods from the knuckles
    Lower control arms from the wheel knuckles
    Stabilizer bar from the strut
    Power steering lines from the steering gear
  5. Support the subframe with a suitable lifting device.
  6. Remove the six subframe bolts and lower the subframe from the vehicle.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
    Right hand halfshaft from the transmission and hang securely aside
    Left hand halfshaft from the transmission and hang securely aside
  8. Loosen, but do not remove, the starter mounting bolts
  9. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line.
  10. Secure the transmission to a jack or suitable lifting device.
  11. Remove the 10 transmission-to-engine bolts.
  12. Pull the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the pressure plate, then lower the transmission from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. Lift the transmission into the vehicle.
  2. Tighten the transmission-to-engine bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  3. Connect the clutch hydraulic line.
  4. Tighten the starter motor mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Left hand halfshaft
    Right hand halfshaft
    VSS
    Subframe and tighten mounting bolts to 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
    Power steering lines
    Stabilizer bar to the strut
    Lower control arms to the wheel knuckles
    Tie rods to the knuckles
    Engine roll restrictor
    Upper transmission-to-engine bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)
    Reverse lamp switch
    Rear engine mount bracket and tighten bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
    Rear engine mount and tighten bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm). Tighten the center nut to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm).
  6. Remove the engine support tools.
  7. Install or connect the following:

    HO2S and CMS sensors
    Hydraulic clutch line to the retaining bracket
    Gearshift cables to the bracket
    Gearshift cables to the transaxle
    Resonator and tighten bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm)
    Air intake assembly
    Battery tray
    Steering column shaft bolt
    Negative battery cable
  8. Fill the transmission to the correct level.
  9. Adjust the shift linkage if necessary.
  10. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Except 2.0L (VIN N) & 2.3L (VIN Z) Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Attach a support fixture to the engine lifting eyes.
  3. Loosen the front strut center nuts 5 turns.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery and tray
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor connector
    Air cleaner assembly
    Air intake pipe
    Clutch slave cylinder fluid line
    Shift cables
    Exhaust flex pipe
    Engine front mount
    Lower ball joints
    Axle halfshafts and intermediate shaft
    Drive belt cover
    Reverse light switch connector
    Vehicle Speed (VSS) sensor connector
    Rear engine mount and bracket
    Starter motor
    Transaxle flange bolts. Support the transaxle.
    Transaxle
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle. Tighten the flange bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
    Starter motor
    Rear engine mount bracket. Tighten the fastener to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    Rear engine mount. Tighten the outer nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) and the center nut to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm).
    VSS sensor connector
    Reverse light switch connector
    Drive belt cover
    Axle halfshafts and intermediate shaft
    Lower ball joints. Tighten the pinch bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    Right engine mount. Tighten the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
    Exhaust flex pipe
    Shift cables
    Clutch slave cylinder fluid line
    Air intake pipe
    Air cleaner assembly
    MAF sensor connector
    Battery and tray
  2. Tighten the strut center nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
