Inner
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove the axle halfshaft from the vehicle and place it in a vise.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Tripod joint boot clampsTripod joint bootTripod joint housingSnapringTripod joint
To install:
NOTE
Use new snaprings and boot clamps for assembly.
- Install or connect the following:
Tripod jointSnapringTripod joint housing. Fill the joint housing with grease.Tripod joint bootTripod joint boot clamps - Install the halfshaft.
The outer CV-joint is serviced with the halfshaft as an assembly. The outer CV-joint boot can be serviced by removing the inner tripod joint.
With Manual Transaxle
Assembly
WARNING
The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees; the outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.
NOTE
Install the wheel-side boot over the transaxle side.
- Install the boot at the wheel end and inject grease into the outer joint.
- Slide a suitable tool under the boot seat to allow the air to escape.
- Locate the boot in position and remove the suitable tool.
NOTEInstall new clamping straps. - Install the boot at the transaxle end, insert the clamping strap in the boot ring groove and tighten it using a CV joint boot strap tightener.
WARNINGDo not damage the universal joint rollers. - Using a suitable bearing press, push the tripod onto the front drive halfshaft as far as it will go.
- Install a new snap ring.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
WARNINGThe inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees; the outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees. - Disconnect the driveshaft at the transaxle end.
- Separate and discard the clamping straps. Push back the boot along the shaft.
- Pull apart the tripod joint and remove all the grease.
- Remove the tripod snap ring.
- Remove the tripod with a suitable bearing separator.
- Detach the boot at the wheel end and remove the grease.
