How to test Ford Focus Crankshaft Position Sensor?

  1. Turn the ignition key OFF.
  2. Using a Digital Volt Ohmmeter (DVOM), backprobe the CKP (-) terminal of the harness and ground. The resistance should be less than 5 volts. If not check for a short in the GND circuit.
  3. Measure the resistance between CKP (+) and the negative battery terminal.
  4. The resistance should be approximately 10, 000 ohms. If the resistance is greater than specified resistance, replace the sensor. If the resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, check for a wiring harness for short circuits.
  5. Measure the resistance between CKP (-) and the negative battery terminal.
  6. The resistance should be approximately 10, 000 ohms. If the resistance is greater than specified resistance, replace the sensor. If the resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, check for a wiring harness for short circuits.
  7. To perform this test accurately, the ambient air temperature should be 68°F (20°C).
  8. Turn the ignition key OFF.
  9. Unplug the CKP electrical connection.
  10. Using a Digital Volt Ohmmeter (DVOM), set to read resistance, probe the CKP (+) terminal of the CKP sensor connector with the DVOM's positive lead. Attach the DVOM's negative lead to a good engine ground. Note the reading.
  11. Backprobe the CKP (+) terminal of the CKP sensor connector with the DVOM's positive lead in the same manner and note the resistance reading.
  12. The resistance should be 520-580 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If readings are not as specified, replace the CKP sensor.
1.9L & 2.0L Engines

  1. Visually inspect the CKP sensor and the trigger wheel for damage.
  2. Unplug the CKP harness.
  3. Probe the CKP (-) wire on the wiring harness connector and turn the ignition key ON. The voltage should be greater than 0.8 volts and less than 2.2 volts DC.
  4. If no voltage is present, check the continuity of the CKP (-) wire between the wiring connector and the EDIS module. If the wire has continuity, check the EDIS module is getting power, If power is present, replace the EDIS module and retest the system.
  5. Attach jumper wires from the CKP sensor connector to the wiring harness. This permits the engine to operate normally while you check the sensor.
  6. Set a Digital Volt Ohmmeter (DVOM) on the AC voltage scale.
  7. Start the engine and observe the voltage reading while varying the rpm, the voltage should also vary.
If there is no signal, unplug the wiring harness from the sensor and check the harness for continuity and shorts to ground. Repair as necessary and attach the harness to the sensor.
