1998 Cadillac Power Steering Gear replace Procedure?

In this chapter Power steering gear replacing procedure is provided for Cadillac car models Year 1990 to 1998.

The procedure is for following caddy car models:----
GM Cadillac Deville/Fleetwood/ELDORADO/Seville  And Catera.


Power Steering Gear removal procedure is as follows:----

Catera

NOTE
If your vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, refer to the information regarding the implications of servicing your A/C system yourself. Only an MVAC-trained, EPA-certified, automotive technician should service the A/C system or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the windshield wiper assembly.
  3. Remove the three body harness electrical connectors.

  1. Remove the PCM from the electrical box.
  2. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.

  1. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  2. Evacuate and recover the refrigerant from the A/C system

  1. Remove the A/C evaporative line extension bolt.
  2. Siphon the power steering fluid from the reservoir to prevent excessive spillage.
  3. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir.
  4. Siphon the brake fluid from the reservoir to minimize spillage.
  5. Remove the brake booster vacuum connection from the intake plenum.
  6. Remove the brake pipes from the master cylinder.
  7. Remove the electrical connector from the master cylinder reservoir cap.
  8. Remove the sound insulator.
  9. Match-mark the lower steering coupler with the splines on the steering gear, if the same gear is to be reinstalled.
  10. Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate when the steering gear coupler is disconnected or damage to the SIR coil inside the steering column will result.
  11. Remove the steering coupler bolts from the coupler.

WARNING
After the key is removed, a substantial range of steering wheel travel is possible before the locking mechanism will set, therefore, it is necessary to lock the steering wheel with a locking device.

  1. Perform the following steps to remove the steering column from the steering gear;
    1. Place the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.
    2. Lock the steering wheel in place with the appropriate device.
    3. Carefully spread the clamp open to allow the shaft to be moved upward and out of the way of the steering gear connection.
  2. Perform the following steps to remove the brake pedal from the brake power booster link rod.
    1. Remove the retaining clip from the pin.
    2. Drive the pin out of the linkage rod.
  3. Remove the I/P driver knee bolster energy absorber.
  4. Remove the fuse panel. Remove the relay panel screws. Reposition out of the way.
  5. Position the panels out of the way to enable easier access to the upper brake vacuum booster nuts.
  6. Remove the vacuum booster nuts from the inward side of the cowl.
  7. Remove the vacuum booster with the master cylinder attached.
  8. Remove the A/C evaporator line extension quick connect.
  9. Remove the power steering hoses from the steering gear. The repositioning of the power steering hoses aid in the removal of the anti-lock brake module.
  10. Remove the Electronic Brake Traction Control Module/Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (EBTCM/BPMV) assembly.
  11. Remove the heat shield upper fastening bolt.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  2. Remove the pitman arm nut and washer. Mark the alignment of the pitman arm in relation to the splines on the steering gear if the steering gear is to be reused.
  3. Use a universal pitman arm puller to remove the pitman arm. Note the rubber steering gear shaft protector.
  4. Unscrew the lower heat shield nuts.

  1. Remove the steering gear lower bolts, nuts, and washers.
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Remove the heat shield.

  1. Detach the electrical connection from the power steering fluid flow control valve actuator.
  2. Remove the upper steering gear bolt and shims. Note the position of the shims for reinstallation.

  1. Remove the steering gear.
To install:

NOTE
Rotate the stub shaft from stop to stop with a 5 / 16 inch (8 mm) open-end wrench counting the number of turns before installing on the vehicle.

  1. Starting at either stop, turn the stub shaft back 1 / 2 the total number of turns.
  2. Align the mark on the stub shaft to V mark on the steering gear case. This is the center of the gear.
    1. Install the steering gear. Install the shims. Install the upper steering gear bolt.

WARNING
Tighten the upper steering gear bolt until snug. Tighten to final specifications after the remaining bolts are installed.

  1. Install the electrical connection to the power steering fluid flow control valve actuator.
  2. Secure the heat shield with the upper heat shield bolt. Tighten the upper heat shield bolt to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  4. Install the lower steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers. Tighten the upper and the lower steering gear bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  5. Install the lower heatshield nuts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  6. Install the pitman arm. Tighten the pitman arm nut to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Install the ABS module.
  9. Install the power steering gear inlet and outlet hoses to the steering gear. Tighten the power steering gear inlet and outlet hoses to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    1. Use new O rings when installing the A/C evaporator line extension quick connects.
    2. Lubricate the new with mineral oil 525 viscosity.
  10. Install the A/C evaporator line extension quick connect.
  11. Install the vacuum booster nuts to the inward side of the cowl. Tighten the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  12. Reposition the fuse and the relay panels. Tighten the screws until snug.
  13. Install the I/P driver knee bolster energy absorber.
  14. Replace the brake pedal to the booster link rod.
    1. Drive the pin into the linkage rod.
    2. Install the retaining clip to the pin.
  15. If reinstalling the same gear, align the matchmark.
  16. If the gear has been replaced, place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position and connect the coupler. Install the coupler bolts and tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  17. Install the sound insulator.
  18. Install the brake pipes to the master cylinder and tighten to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  19. Attach the electrical connector to the master cylinder reservoir cap.
  20. Install the brake booster vacuum connection to intake plenum.
  21. Position the power steering fluid reservoir.
  22. Install the power steering fluid reservoir clamp bolt. Tighten to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
    1. Use new sealing O rings when installing the A/C evaporator line extension to cowl.
    2. Lubricate the new with mineral oil 525 viscosity.
  23. Install the A/C evaporator line extension to cowl. Tighten the A/C evaporator line extension bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  24. Install the upper radiator hose.
  25. Install the PCM. Install the three body harness electrical connectors.
  26. Install the windshield wiper assembly.
  27. Bring the fluid levels to the proper marks.
  28. Bleed the power steering system.
  29. Recharge the A/C system.
  30. Connect the negative battery cable.
Deville and Fleetwood-Early Models
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.

WARNING
The front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become off-center, which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

  1. Detach the intermediate shaft lower connection.

CAUTION
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control, which could result in personal injury.

  1. Disconnect both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
  2. Remove the line retainer.
  3. Disconnect the outlet and pressure lines.
  4. Remove the 5 rack and pinion mounting bolts and remove the rack and pinion assembly by sliding it out to the side.
To install:

  1. Position the rack and pinion assembly and install the 5 mounting bolts. Tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  2. Connect the outlet and pressure lines to the rack and pinion assembly and tighten the fittings to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  3. Install the line retainer.
  4. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  5. Connect the intermediate shaft coupling and tighten the bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  6. Install the wheel and tire assemblies and lower the vehicle.
  7. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
Deville and Fleetwood-Late Models
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.

CAUTION
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control, which could result in personal injury.


WARNING
The front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become off-center, which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

  1. Detach the intermediate shaft lower connection.
  2. Disconnect both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
  3. Remove the line retainer.
  4. Detach the pressure switch electrical connection. If equipped with speed sensitive steering, detach the electrical connection at the control valve and manifold.
  5. Disconnect the power steering pressure and return lines. If equipped with speed sensitive steering, remove the filter as needed for access.
  6. Support the body with jackstands to allow lowering of the frame.
  7. Loosen the front frame bolts. Remove the rear frame bolts and lower the rear of the frame about 3 in. (76 mm).

WARNING
Do not lower the rear of the frame too far, as damage to the engine components nearest to the cowl may result.

  1. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts and remove the rack and pinion assembly through the left wheel opening.
To install:
  1. Install the rack and pinion assembly through the left wheel opening and position it in the vehicle.
  2. Raise the rear of the frame and tighten the frame bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm). Remove the jackstands.
  3. Install the 2 washers and 5 rack and pinion mounting bolts. Loctite® thread locking kit No. 1052624 or equivalent must be used. Tighten the bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm), in the sequence shown.

  1. Connect the power steering pressure and return lines (including the filter on speed sensitive steering systems, if removed) and tighten the connections to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  2. Attach the pressure switch electrical connector. If equipped with speed sensitive steering, also make the electrical connections at the control valve and manifold.
  3. Install the line retainer.
  4. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  5. Connect the intermediate shaft lower coupling and tighten the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  6. Install the front wheel and tire assemblies and lower the vehicle.
  7. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
Eldorado and Seville-Early Models
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.

CAUTION
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control, which could result in personal injury.


WARNING
The front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become off-center, which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

  1. Disconnect the intermediate shaft lower coupling.
  2. Remove the heat shield.
  3. Disconnect both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
  4. Support the rear of the frame with a jack.

WARNING
The frame must be properly supported before partial lowering. The frame should not be lowered any further than needed to gain access to the steering gear.

  1. Loosen the rear body mount bolts and slowly lower the rear of the frame.
  2. Remove the line retainer.
  3. Disconnect the power steering pressure and return lines.
  4. Detach the pressure switch connector.
  5. Remove the 5 rack and pinion mounting bolts and remove the rack and pinion assembly by sliding it out to the side.

To install:
  1. Position the rack and pinion assembly and install the 5 mounting bolts. Tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  2. Connect the return and pressure lines to the rack and pinion assembly and tighten the fittings to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  3. Install the line retainer.
  4. Raise the frame into position and tighten the body mount bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  5. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  6. Connect the intermediate shaft lower coupling and tighten the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  7. Attach the pressure switch connector and install the heat shield.
  8. Install the front wheel and tire assemblies and lower the vehicle.
  9. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
Eldorado and Seville-Late Models

CAUTION
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.


WARNING
The front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become off-center, which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

  1. Disconnect the intermediate shaft lower coupling.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4. If equipped with 4.6L engine, disconnect the road sensing suspension position sensor.
  5. Disconnect both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
  6. If equipped with 4.6L engine, disconnect the exhaust pipe at the catalytic converter.
  7. Support the rear of the frame with a jack.

WARNING
The frame must be properly supported before partial lowering. The frame should not be lowered any further than needed to gain access to the steering gear.

  1. Loosen the rear body mount bolts and slowly lower the rear of the frame.
  2. Remove the heat shield and the plastic line retainer.
  3. Disconnect the power steering pressure and return lines.
  4. Detach the speed sensitive steering solenoid valve connector.
  5. Remove the 5 rack and pinion mounting bolts and remove the rack and pinion assembly by sliding it out to the side.

To install:
  1. Position the rack and pinion assembly and install the 5 mounting bolts. Tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  2. Attach the speed sensitive steering solenoid valve connector.
  3. Connect the return and pressure lines to the rack and pinion assembly and tighten the fittings to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  4. Install the plastic line retainer and the heat shield.
  5. Raise the frame into position and tighten the body mount bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  6. If equipped with 4.6L engine, connect the exhaust pipe at the catalytic converter.
  7. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  8. If equipped, connect the road sensing suspension position sensor.
  9. Install the left front wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
  10. Connect the intermediate shaft lower coupling and tighten the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  11. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
