How to replace Tie Rod Ends on 2005 Dodge Ram?

The detailed procedure to replace Tie Rod Ends.

The Procedure mentioned Covers Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 2WD & 4WD. Its For 2001 – 2005 Year Models.

The procedure is as follows:---


Tie Rod Ends



  1. Remove the cotter pin and the castellated nut from the outer tie rod end. Discard the cotter pin.
  2. Separate the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle using an appropriate tie rod end remover.
  3. Mark the outer tie rod jam nut on one side with a reference line for installation.
  4. Hold the outer tie rod end with a wrench and loosen the tie rod end jam nut.
  5. Back the tie rod end jam nut off ONE FULL TURN ONLY.
  6. Remove the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod spindle.
To install:
  1. Clean the threads on the inner tie rod spindle (front wheel spindle connecting rod).
  2. Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod until it bottoms on the jam nut.
  3. Back the tie rod and jam nut out one full turn until the reference line is in the same position as before.
  4. Place the outer tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle. Set the front wheels in a straight ahead position.
  5. Install a new castellated nut onto the outer tie rod end stud.
  6. Torque the nut to the proper specification.
  7. Continue to tighten the castellated nut until a new cotter pin can be inserted through the hole in the stud. Install a new cotter pin.
  8. If required, repeat the procedure for the opposite side.
  9. Check the alignment and set the toe adjustment to specification.
  10. Torque the outer tie rod end jam nut to the proper torque.

NOTE
Only the outer tie-rod end can be removed from the heavy duty tie rods.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove cotter pin and retaining nut from the tie-rod end ball stud.
  3. Remove tie-rod end at the steering knuckle or center link with Puller C-3894-A.
  4. Loosen tie-rod sleeve clamp bolts and unthread the tie-rod end from the sleeve.

To install:
  1. Thread the tie-rod end into sleeve.
  2. Install tie-rod end on steering knuckle arm or enter link.
  3. Install nut and tighten to:
    1. LD 9/16 ball stud: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
    2. HD 5/8 ball stud: 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm)
  4. Install a new cotter pin.
  5. Remove the supports and carefully lower the vehicle.
  6. Adjust the wheel toe position.
