How to Replace Compressor on Dodge & Chrysler?

The compressor replacing details and Procedure.

Please Note that this Procedure Covers all U.S. and Canadian models of the Chrysler/Dodge Avenger, Chrysler Sebring Coupe and Dodge Stratus/ Stratus Coupe models for Year 1999 to 2005.


The procedure is as follows:---
Compressor Removal/ Installation:---



CAUTION
Only a MVAC-trained, EPA-certified, automotive technician should service the A/C system or its components.


Use a refrigerant recovery unit to discharge refrigerant gas from the system.

Disconnect battery negative cable from remote negative terminal on shock tower and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.

Remove or disconnect the following:
Condenser fan motor (3.0L engine)

Drive belt
High and low pressure hoses from A/C compressor and discard the O-rings
A/C compressor from bracket

To install:

Install or connect the following:

WARNING
Be certain to lubricate the O-rings with PAG A/C compressor oil

A/C compressor to bracket
High and low pressure hoses to A/C compressor with new O-rings
Drive belt and tension to 90-110 lbs. (400-490 N) for a used belt or 110-160 lbs. (490-712 N) for a new belt.
Condenser fan motor (3.0L engine).


  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Loosen and remove accessory drive belt .
  3. Disconnect compressor clutch harness connector.
  4. Recover refrigerant system with R-134a recovery unit.
  5. Remove the refrigerant lines from compressor .

  6. Remove the compressor attaching bolts.
  7. Remove the compressor.
To install:
  1. Position the compressor on the mount.
  2. Install the compressor attaching bolts. Tighten bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  3. Install the drive belt (refer to Engine Mechanical Section of this Manual).
  4. Install the refrigerant hoses and new seals.
  5. Connect the clutch harness connector.
  6. Charge the system.
  7. Connect the negative cable to the battery.

  1. Disconnect the harness connector from the A/C compressor clutch coil connector.
  2. Remove the bolts that secure the A/C suction line and A/C discharge line to the A/C compressor.

  3. Disconnect the A/C suction and discharge lines from the A/C compressor and remove and discard the O-ring seals.
