Crankshaft Damper Replacing Procedure for Dodge Ram?

The Details are for Dodge Ram 3.9L, 5.2L, 5.9L Gasoline Engines.

The Procedure mentioned Covers Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 2WD & 4WD. Its For 2001 – 2005 Year Models.

The Details and Diagrams are as follows:----

3.9L, 5.2L, 5.9L Gasoline Engines

NOTE
Crankshaft Vibration Damper Puller/Installer Kit, Tool C-3688 or equivalent is required.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the fan shroud.
  3. Remove the engine fan.
  4. Remove the accessory belt.
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

    Fig. After unfastening the retaining bolts, remove the crankshaft pulley from the damper and set it aside
  6. Remove the vibration damper bolt and washer from the crankshaft.

  7. Install the puller assembly on the vibration damper, and thread the forcing screw into the crankshaft. Install two bolts and washers through the puller and into the damper. Remove the vibration damper by turning the forcing screw.

  8. When loosened, pull the damper off of the crankshaft

    Fig. Inspect the damper for wear on its front seal surface. If worn, be sure to replace it, or the engine may leak oil
To install:
  1. Using tool C-3688, or equivalent, press the damper onto the shaft. Remove the tool and install the damper bolt. Tighten the bolt to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm).
  2. Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten pulley bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm). Use same torque for the fan bolts.
  3. The remainder of the procedure is the reverse of removal.

3.9L & 5.2L Engines

  1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
  2. Remove fan, and fan drive.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4. Remove the vibration damper pulley.
  5. Remove vibration damper bolt and washer from end of crankshaft.
  6. Install bar and screw from Puller Tool Set C-3688. Install two bolts with washers through the puller tool and into the vibration damper.

  7. Pull vibration damper off of the crankshaft.
To install:
  1. Position the vibration damper onto the crankshaft.
  2. Place installing tool, part of Puller Tool Set C-3688, in position and press the vibration damper onto the crankshaft.

  3. Install the crankshaft bolt and washer. Tighten the bolt to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm).
  4. Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the pulley bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  5. Install the serpentine belt.
  6. Install viscous fan drive and fan.
  7. Install the fan shroud.
  8. Connect the negative cable to the battery.

5.9L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the cooling system fan.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4. Remove vibration damper bolt and washer from end of crankshaft.
  5. Position Special Tool 8513 Insert into the crankshaft nose.
  6. Install Special Tool 1026 Three Jaw Puller onto the vibration damper.
  7. Pull vibration damper off of the crankshaft.

To install:

WARNING
Thoroughly remove any contaminants from the crankshaft nose and the vibration damper bore. Failure to do so can cause Severe damage to the crankshaft.

  1. Position the vibration damper onto the crankshaft.
  2. Place installing tool, part of Puller Tool Set C-3688 in position and press the vibration damper onto the crankshaft.
  3. Install the crankshaft bolt and washer. Tighten the bolt to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm).
  4. Install the accessory drive belt.
  5. Position the fan shroud and install the bolts. Tighten the retainer bolts to 95 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  6. Install the cooling fan.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
