How to Replace Accessory Drive Belts on Cadillac Catera?

Adjustment



The accessory drive belt is self adjusting.

Belt Tension Inspection



Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation




NOTE
 Do not use belt dressing on the drive belt. Belt dressing causes the breakdown of the composition of the drive belt. Failure to follow this recommendation will damage the drive belt.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove 4 engine splash shield bolts.
  4. Remove engine splash shield.
  5. Remove the AIR injection crossover pipe bracket nut (6) from the generator mounting bolt. It may be necessary to hold the generator bolt on the back side of the generator when removing the nut (6).
  6. Remove the AIR injection crossover pipe bushing nut (1), located on the left side of the engine, from the bracket.
  7. Remove the AIR injection crossover pipe clamps from the rubber hose connections (2).
  8. Remove the AIR injection crossover pipe from the rubber hose connections.
  9. Remove the A/C compressor hose strap bolt (1).

  10. Position the AIR injection crossover pipe (4) out of the way to enable removal of the drive belt. Use a 15 mm wrench on center bolt of the tensioner pulley (5) and rotate clockwise to release drivebelt tension.
  11. Slide the belt (7) from the water pump pulley and remove.
To install:

NOTE
Refer to the drive belt routing diagram to install the serpentine drive belt.

  1. Clean the drive belt surfaces and accessory drive pulleys.
    NOTE
    Ensure the drive belt is properly aligned and seated into the grooves of the accessory drive pulleys.
  2. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise.
  3. Route the drive belt over the top of the water pump pulley last.
  4. Release the drive belt tensioner and inspect the drive belt for proper seating in the accessory drive pulleys.
  5. Reposition the AIR injection crossover pipe (4).
  6. Install the AIR injection crossover pipe to the rubber hose connections (2).
  7. Install the AIR injection crossover pipe clamps to the rubber hose connections.
  8. Install the A/C compressor hose strap bolt (1). Tighten the A/C compressor hose support strap bolt to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  9. Install the AIR injection crossover pipe bushing nut (6) to the generator bolt and tighten to 108 inch lbs (12 Nm).
  10. Counterhold the generator bolt on the back side of the generator to tighten the AIR injection crossover pipe support bracket nut to the generator bolt and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  11. Install the engine splash shield.
  12. Install the 4 engine splash shield bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  13. Lower the vehicle.
