How to replace Heater core for Chevrolet Express VAN, Avalanche and GM Savana?

In this chapter the details are provided for replacing heater core.
The heater core replacing procedure is for Chevrolet Avalanche, Express Van, and GM Savana  car models.

The procedure is mentioned with complete details and Helpful diagrams.
Diagrams makes the replacement much easier.

So the details to replace heater core are as follows :-----


  1. Drain the engine cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following: 

    Negative battery cable
    Heater hoses from the heater core
    Temperature control cable from the heater case assembly
    Disconnect the mode control cable from the heater case assembly
    Instrument panel carrier to provide access to the heater case assembly
    Electrical connectors that may interfere with the heater case assembly removal
    Heater case assembly-to-chassis screws/nuts and the assembly. Place the heater case assembly on a bench.

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Heater core to the heater case
    Heater core cover screws and tighten to 14 inch lbs. (1.5 Nm)
    Heater case assembly and the assembly-to-chassis screws, then, tighten the screws to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm) and the nuts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
    Electrical connectors, as necessary
    Instrument panel carrier
    Mode control cable to the heater case assembly
    Temperature control cable to the heater case assembly
    Heater hoses to the heater core
    Negative battery cable.
  2. Refill the engine cooling system.
  3. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
  1. Drain the engine cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  2. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Heater hoses from the heater core
    Positive battery cable, the battery hold-down and the battery
    Refrigeration lines from the air conditioning accumulator and discard the gaskets
    Air conditioning accumulator
    Lower right kick panel and the knee bolster, from the right side
    Lower outer floor air outlet duct
    Heater case screws
  4. Carefully open the heater core access door.

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Heater core and the heater core-to-heater case retainers. Carefully, close the heater core access door.
    Heater case screws
    Lower outer floor air outlet duct
    Knee bolster and the lower right kick panel
    Air conditioning accumulator.
    Refrigeration lines to the air conditioning accumulator, using new gaskets
    Battery, the battery hold-down and the positive battery cable
    Heater hoses to the heater core
  2. Evacuate and charge the air conditioning system.
  3. Refill the engine cooling system.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.
  5. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
