Knuckle and Spindle Removal for Cadillac Suspension?

The details mentioned in this chapter are for Cadillac car models.
This procedure covers following Cadillac car models:-----

GM Cadillac Deville, Fleetwood, ELDORADO, Seville and Catera car models.
The procedure will work for Cadillac car model Years 1990 to 1998.


The details are as follows:-----


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Catera
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  2. Remove the front wheels.
  3. Remove the brake pad wear indicator rubber sleeve from the strut assembly.
  4. Remove the wheel speed sensor and brake hose from the strut bracket.
  5. Remove the brake caliper and support it.

NOTE
Brake hydraulic system remains closed.

  1. Remove the wheel hub from the steering knuckle.
  2. Use special tool J 6627-A to remove the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  3. Unbolt the stabilizer shaft link.
  4. Remove the strut from the steering knuckle.
  5. Remove the lower control arm ball stud pinch bolt and remove the steering knuckle from the lower control arm ball stud.
Deville, Eldorado, Fleetwood and Seville
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle, allowing the front suspension to hang free.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.

WARNING
When working near the halfshafts, be careful not to overextend the inner CV-joints. If the joint is overextended, the internal components may separate resulting in joint failure. Be careful when working in the area of the CV-joint boot. Damage to the boot could result in eventual CV-joint failure. If necessary, install CV-joint boot protector tool J-34754 or equivalent, to protect the boot.

  1. Remove the hub and bearing assembly.
  2. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the tie rod end. Use separator tool J-24319-01 or equivalent, to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  3. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the ball joint stud. Use ball joint separator tool J-36226 or equivalent, on Deville and Fleetwood; or ball joint separator tool J-35315 or equivalent, on Eldorado and Seville, to separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  4. If necessary, disconnect the anti-lock brake wheel speed sensor, if equipped.
  5. Remove the strut-to-knuckle bolts and remove the knuckle.
To install:
  1. Position the knuckle and install the strut-to-knuckle bolts. Tighten the strut-to-knuckle bolts to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm).
  2. If necessary, connect the anti-lock brake wheel speed sensor. If the sensor was removed on Eldorado and Seville, anti-corrosion compound must be applied to the sensor before assembly.
  3. Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle and install the castellated nut.
  4. On Deville and Fleetwood, tighten the ball joint nut to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Then tighten the nut an additional 120°, during which a torque of 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) must be obtained.
  5. On Eldorado and Seville, tighten the ball joint nut to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Then tighten the nut an additional 120°, during which a minimum torque of 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) must be obtained. If the minimum torque is not obtained, check for stripped threads. If the threads are okay, replace the ball joint and knuckle.
  6. Install a new cotter pin. If the cotter pin cannot be installed because the hole in the stud does not align with a nut castellation, tighten the nut up to an additional 60° to allow for installation. NEVER loosen the nut to provide for cotter pin installation.
  7. Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Install the tie rod end nut and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm). Install a new cotter pin. If the cotter pin cannot be installed because the hole in the stud does not align with a nut castellation, tighten the nut up to a maximum of 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) to allow for installation. NEVER loosen the nut to provide for cotter pin installation.
  8. Install the hub and bearing assembly.
  9. Install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle. Check the front wheel alignment.
