Engine Front Cover & Seal
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
4.6L (VIN H) DOHC Engine
- Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove the valve covers.
- If removing the timing chains, gears or other valve train components, remove the camshaft roller followers.
- Remove the cooling fan.
- Remove the accessory drive belt.
- Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
- Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulleys.
- Remove the power steering reservoir bracket.
- Remove the CMP sensor.
- Remove the oil filter.
- Remove the power steering hose bracket.
- Remove the power steering pump.
- Remove the A/C compressor electrical connector.
- Remove the battery wiring harness.
- Remove the A/C compressor.
- Remove the transmission tube clip.
- Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
- Remove the water pump pulley.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley.
NOTETo remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, remove the upper fan shroud and electric fan. - Remove the crankshaft seal.
- Remove the engine front cover.
NOTERemove the four oil pan-to-engine front cover bolts. - Remove the engine front cover gaskets.
To install:
NOTE
If the engine front cover is not secured within four minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface cleaner. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or four minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow these instructions can result in future oil leakage.
- Apply sealant in the locations shown.
- Install the engine front cover seals and the engine front cover, and tighten the fasteners in the sequence shown.
- Tighten the oil pan bolts in the sequence shown in three stages:
Stage 1: Tighten to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).Stage 2: Tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).Stage 3: Tighten an additional 60 degrees.
Crankshaft Seal Installation
- Lubricate the engine front cover and the crankshaft seal inner lip with clean engine oil.
- Using the special tools, install the crankshaft seal.
Crankshaft Pulley Bolt Installation
NOTE
The crankshaft pulley must be installed within four minutes after applying the sealant.
- Apply sealant to the Woodruff key slot on the crankshaft pulley.
- Using the special tool, install the crankshaft pulley.
- Install the bolt and the washer. Tighten the bolt in four stages:
Stage 1: Tighten the bolt to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).Stage 2: Loosen the bolt one full turn.Stage 3: Tighten the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).Stage 4: Tighten the bolt an additional 90 degrees.
Front Cover
- Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
- Drain the engine oil and coolant.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Battery ground cableBoth valve coversRadiator and the transmission coolerDrive beltWater pumpCMP sensorUpper radiator hose bracketEGR vacuum regulator solenoidDrive belt tensionerIdler pulleysCrankshaft pulleyCoolant hose clampsCKP sensorOil pan to front cover boltsCrankshaft front oil sealTiming cover bolts and studsFront cover from the cylinder block
To install:
NOTE
If the engine front cover is not secured within four minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface cleaner.
- Apply silicone gasket and sealant along the cylinder head to block surface and the oil pan to cylinder block surface.
- Install the engine front cover on the front cover to cylinder block dowel and loosely install the bolts.
- Tighten the front cover bolts and stud bolts in the sequence shown.
- Install a new crankshaft front oil seal.
- Loosely install the pan-to-cover bolts, then, tighten the bolts in two stages, inner bolts first.
Step 1: Tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)Step 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees - The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
- Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Crankshaft pulleyFront oil seal with a puller
To install:
- Lubricate the front cover and the front oil seal inner lip with clean engine oil.
- Use a seal driver to install the front oil seal into the engine front cover.
- Install the crankshaft pulley.
