Timing Chain & Sprockets:--
2.0L (VIN N) & 2.3L (VIN Z) Engine
Removal & Installation
2.0L (VIN N) & 2.3L (VIN Z) Engine
CAUTION
The crankshaft, the crankshaft sprocket and the pulley are fitted together by friction, using diamond washers between the flange faces on each part. For that reason, the crankshaft sprocket is also unfastened if you loosen the pulley. Therefore the engine must be retimed each time the damper is removed. Otherwise severe engine damage can occur.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove the engine front cover. See -Timing Chain Cover and Seal- in this section.
- Remove the timing chain tensioner:
- Remove the RH timing chain guide.
- Remove the timing chain.
- Remove the bolts and the LH timing chain guide.
- If necessary, remove the bolts and the camshaft sprockets. Use the flats on the camshaft to prevent camshaft rotation.
To install:
- If installed on the camshaft, remove the special holding tool.
CAUTIONDo not rotate the camshafts. Damage to the valves and pistons can occur. - If the camshaft sprockets were not removed, use the flats on the camshafts to prevent camshaft rotation and loosen the sprocket bolts.
- If removed, install the camshaft sprockets and the bolts. Do not tighten the bolts at this time.
- Install the LH timing chain guide and bolts. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Install the timing chain.
- Install the RH timing chain guide.
- Install the timing chain tensioner and the bolts. Remove the paper clip to release the piston. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Reinstall the special tool onto the camshafts.
- Using the flats on the camshafts to prevent camshaft rotation, tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
- Install the front cover. See -Timing Chain Cover and Seal-.
