Rear Main Seal


Removal & Installation



2.0L (VIN 3, 5 And P) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Transaxle
    Clutch, if equipped
    Flexplate/flywheel
    Oil seal
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil seal. Seat the seal flush with the rear of the crankshaft oil seal retainer.
    Flexplate/flywheel. Tighten the bolts to 82 ft. lbs. (112 Nm).
    Clutch, if equipped
    Transaxle
    Negative battery cable
  2. Start the engine and check for leaks.
2.0L (VIN N) & 2.3L (VIN Z) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the transaxle.
  3. Remove the flywheel or flexplate.
  4. Remove the oil level indicator and tube.
    CAUTION
    If the oil pan is not removed, damage to the rear seal retainer joint can occur.
  5. Remove the oil pan.
  6. Remove the bolts and the crankshaft rear oil seal.
To install:
  1. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal on the Crankshaft Rear Main Oil Seal Installer 303-328.
  2. Install the Crankshaft Rear Main Oil Seal Installer and the crankshaft rear oil seal on the crankshaft. Tighten the bolts, in the sequence shown, to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).

  3. Remove the Crankshaft Rear Main Oil Seal Installer.
  4. Install the oil pan.
  5. Install the flywheel or flexplate. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown as follows:.
    1. Step 1: Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2. Step 2: Tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    3. Step 3: Tighten to 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm).
  6. Install the transaxle.
  7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
2.0L (VIN N) And 2.3L (VIN Z) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the transaxle.
  3. Remove the flywheel or flexplate.
    CAUTION
    If the oil pan is not removed damage to the rear seal retainer joint can occur.
  4. Remove the oil pan.
  5. Remove the bolts and the crankshaft rear oil seal.
To install:
  1. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal on the Crankshaft Rear Main Oil Seal Installer 303-328.
  2. Install the Crankshaft Rear Main Oil Seal Installer and the crankshaft rear oil seal on the crankshaft.
  3. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).

  4. Remove the Crankshaft Rear Main Oil Seal Installer.
  5. Install the oil pan.
  6. Install the flywheel or flexplate. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown as follows:.
    1. Step 1: Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2. Step 2: Tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    3. Step 3: Tighten to 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm).
  7. Install the transaxle.
  8. Fill the engine with clean oil.
