- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the air intake assembly.
- Remove the transmission oil dipstick.
- Remove the engine appearance cover.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the transmission fluid filler tube.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Remove the torque converter housing-to-engine retaining bolts. Position the fuel and electrical harness brackets aside.
- Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes. Plug all fittings and position the transmission fluid cooler tubes aside.
NOTEThe case fittings must be held in place to prevent them from moving. - Mark the driveshaft flange and the rear pinion flange for correct alignment during assembly.
NOTEThe output shaft and driveshaft are a balanced assembly. - Remove the four driveshaft flange bolts.
- Matchmark the driveshaft and extension housing. Slide the driveshaft back enough to index-mark the driveshaft output shaft and the extension housing. Separate the driveshaft from the transmission
- Remove the gear selector lever cable and cable bracket.
- Remove the torque converter access plug.
- Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Starter, Removal & Installation.-
- Remove the fasteners and the front A/C deflector assembly, if equipped.
- Remove and discard the 4 torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nuts.
- Remove the flexplate inspection plate.
- Disconnect the catalyst monitoring sensor harness connectors.
- Remove the bolts.
- Secure the high lift transmission jack to the transmission.
- Remove the crossmember-to-frame nuts.
- Remove the stud brackets.
- Support the crossmember, then remove the transmission insulator and retainer-to-crossmember nuts and the crossmember.
- Remove the lower bell housing bolts.
- Separate and back the transmission away from the engine, positioning the extension housing above the exhaust crossover pipe. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
- Remove any electrical connectors necessary.
To install:
- Raise the transmission into the vehicle.
- Align the torque converter studs with the mounting holes in the flexplate. Install the transmission to the engine.
- Install and alternately tighten the torque converter housing-to-engine retaining bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
- Install four torque converter nuts to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
- Position the transmission inspection cover into place and tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
- Install the torque converter access plug.
- Reconnect the electrical connectors.
- Install the front A/C deflector assembly with the fasteners, if equipped.
- Install the transmission support crossmember onto the transmission retainer and insulator studs. Install the retaining nuts hand-tight.
- Raise the transmission, aligning the transmission support crossmember to the frame.
- Install the stud brackets and the crossmember-to-frame retaining nuts and tighten to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
- Tighten the transmission insulator retainer-to-crossmember retaining nuts and tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
- Remove the jack supporting the transmission.
- Connect the catalyst monitoring sensor harness connectors.
- Install the exhaust heat shield-to-crossmember retaining bolts and tighten to 133 inch lbs. (15 Nm).
- Install the starter.
- Align the index marks and position the driveshaft on the transmission. Position the driveshaft to the rear differential. Install the driveshaft bolts and tighten to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
- Install the gear selector lever cable and bracket. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Connect the gear selector lever cable to the manual lever.
- Install the transmission fluid filler tube. Replace the tube O-ring if necessary. Tighten the bolts as follows:
4.6L Engine: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)5.4L Engine: 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) - Remove the plugs and connect the transmission fluid cooler tubes. Tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
- Install the transmission bolts and tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
- The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
- Ensure the transmission is filled with fluid to the correct level.
TorqShift

Ford E-350 Super Duty 2008-2009
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Driveshaft, Removal & Installation.-
- Drain the transmission fluid and reinstall the drain plug. Tighten the plug to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Support the transmission assembly with a suitable transmission jack.
- Remove the two wiring harness retainers from the crossmember and position them aside.
- Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet tube.
- Remove the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the bracket.
- Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever.
- Disconnect the wire harness from the selector lever cable bracket.
- Remove the bolts and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.
- Remove the heat shield screws from the crossmember.
- Remove the center heat shield screws.
- Remove the center heat shield screw.
- Remove the forward RH heat shield screw.
- Remove the forward RH heat shield screws from the frame.
- Loosen the bolt and disconnect the transmission vehicle harness connector.
- Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) and intermediate shaft speed sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect and position the wire harness aside.
- Disconnect the wire harness from the bracket.
- Remove the cylinder block opening cover in order to gain access to the torque converter nuts.
- Use the Strap Wrench to rotate the crankshaft in order to gain access to the torque converter to flexplate nuts.
- Remove and discard the 6 torque converter to flexplate nuts.
- Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to Section 303-06A .
- Remove the screws and torque converter cover.
- Remove the LH crossmember nuts and bracket.
- Remove the RH crossmember nuts and bracket.
- Remove the transmission insulator and retainer nuts and remove the crossmember.
- Remove the bolts and the transmission insulator and retainer from the extension housing.
- Remove the 9 transmission-to-engine mounting bolts and position the bracket aside.
- Slide the transmission back and install the Torque Converter Retainer.
To install:
- Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with multi-purpose grease.
WARNINGPrior to the installation of the assembly, the torque converter pilot hub must be lubricated or damage to the torque converter or the engine crankshaft can occur. - Rotate the torque converter so the orange or green paint daub is in the 12 o'clock position.
- If the Torque Converter Retainer has not been installed during the assembly of the transmission, install the Torque Converter Retainer to hold the torque converter in place while moving and positioning the transmission in place. Once the transmission is in place, prior to bolting it to the engine, remove the Torque Converter Retainer.
- Install a transmission fluid filler tube O-ring.
- Position the transmission in place. While raising the transmission up into the engine compartment, align the transmission fluid filler tube with the stub tube on the transmission using the transmission fluid level indicator as a guide.
NOTEWhile installing the transmission to the engine, align the torque converter studs with the mounting holes in the flexplate. - Position the bracket in place and install the 9 transmission-to-engine bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
- Using the strap wrench, rotate the crankshaft to gain access to the torque converter studs.
- Install the new torque converter-to-flexplate nuts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
- Install the cylinder block opening cover.
- Install the torque converter cover and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
- Install the transmission insulator and transmission insulator bolts and tighten to 69 ft. lbs. (94 Nm).
- Position the crossmember to the transmission insulator and loosely install the transmission insulator nut.
- Install the LH crossmember bracket and tighten the nuts to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
- Install the RH crossmember bracket and tighten the crossmember nuts to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
- Tighten the transmission insulator nuts to 69 ft. lbs. (94 Nm).
- If equipped, connect the transmission fluid cooler tubes onto the bracket.
- Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet tube while holding the case fitting and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
- Install the transmission fluid cooler outlet tube while holding the case fitting and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
- Connect the wire harness to the bracket.
- Connect the wire harness on the LH and RH side of the transmission.
- Install the starter motor.
- Connect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor connector.
- Connect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) and intermediate shaft speed sensor connector.
- Connect the transmission vehicle harness connector
- Install the selector lever cable and selector lever cable bracket onto the transmission.
- Position the selector lever cable bracket and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
- Connect the selector lever cable onto the manual control lever and connect the wire harness onto the selector lever cable bracket.
- Install the selector lever cable onto the routing clip, if equipped.
- Install the heat shield and tighten the screws to the frame to 177 inch lbs. (20 Nm).
- If equipped, install the wire harness and install the 2 retaining clips to the rear of the crossmember.
- Install the rear driveshaft.
- Prior to lowering the vehicle, install a new transmission fluid in-line filter or a filter kit.
- Connect the battery ground cable.
- Adjust the selector lever cable. Verify that the vehicle starts in PARK and NEUTRAL and the reverse lamps illuminate in REVERSE.
- Install the transmission fluid level indicator.
- Ensure the transmission is filled with fluid to the correct level.
