How to replace Steering Linkage on Ford E series?

The details to replace steering linkage components is as follows:----


Removal & Installation
INNER TIE ROD
SECTOR SHAFT ARM DRAG LINK
STEERING LINKAGE DAMPER
TIE ROD END


Inner Tie Rod



Specific to:
Ford E-150 2008-2009
Ford E-250 2008-2009
Ford E-350 Super Duty 2008-2009
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the inner tie rod end cotter pin and nut.
  4. Using the Steering Arm Remover, separate the inner tie-rod end from the sector shaft arm drag link.
  5. Loosen the adjusting sleeve clamp nut and remove the inner tie-rod end.
    NOTE
    For reference during installation, count and record the number of turns required to remove the inner tie-rod end from the adjusting sleeve.
  6. Position the adjusting sleeve clamp opening downward within 45 degrees of vertical.
  7. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Note the following during installation:

    Use a new cotter pin.
    When tightened, the adjusting sleeve bolts, nuts and clamps must be positioned within 45 degrees of vertical. The threaded ends of the adjusting sleeve bolts should point towards the front of the vehicle.

Sector Shaft Arm Drag Link



Specific to:
Ford E-150 2008-2009
Ford E-250 2008-2009
Ford E-350 Super Duty 2008-2009
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the steering linkage damper, if equipped.
  3. Remove the RH outer tie-rod end cotter pin, nut retainer and nut and discard the cotter pin.
  4. Using a suitable Ball Joint Separator, separate the RH outer tie-rod end from the wheel spindle.
  5. Remove the inner tie-rod end cotter pin and nut.
  6. Using the Steering Arm Remover, separate the inner tie-rod from the sector shaft arm drag link.
  7. Remove the sector shaft arm drag link-to-sector shaft arm cotter pin and nut.
  8. Using the Steering Arm Remover, separate the sector shaft arm drag link from the sector shaft arm and remove the drag link.
  9. Loosen the RH outer tie-rod end adjusting sleeve clamp nut and separate the outer tie-rod end and adjusting sleeve from the sector shaft arm drag link.
    NOTE
    For reference during installation, count and record the number of turns required to separate the outer tie-rod end and adjusting sleeve from the sector shaft arm drag link.
  10. If equipped, remove the 4 steering linkage damper-to-drag link bracket U-bolt nuts, U-bolts and bracket.
  11. Position both adjusting sleeve clamp openings downward within 45 degrees of vertical.
  12. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Note the following during installation:

    Use a new cotter pins.
    When tightened, the adjusting sleeve bolts, nuts and clamps must be positioned within 45 degrees of vertical. The threaded ends of the adjusting sleeve bolts should point towards the front of the vehicle.

Steering Linkage Damper



Specific to:
Ford E-150 2008-2009
Ford E-250 2008-2009
Ford E-350 Super Duty 2008-2009
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the steering linkage damper-to-frame bracket nut and bolt.
  3. Remove the steering linkage damper-to-drag link bracket nut and then remove the damper.
  4. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Tighten the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  5. Rotate the steering wheel from stop to stop. Verify that the steering linkage damper is not bottoming out and that the steering linkage reaches its full travel when the steering wheel is turned from stop-to-stop.

Tie Rod End



Specific to:
Ford E-150 2008-2009
Ford E-250 2008-2009
Ford E-350 Super Duty 2008-2009
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the outer tie-rod end cotter pin, nut retainer and nut.
  4. Using the Ball Joint Separator, separate the outer tie-rod end from the wheel spindle.
  5. Loosen the adjusting sleeve clamp nut and remove the inner tie-rod end.
    NOTE
    For reference during installation, count and record the number of turns required to remove the inner tie-rod end from the adjusting sleeve.
  6. Position the adjusting sleeve clamp opening downward within 45 degrees of vertical.
  7. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Note the following during installation:

    Use a new cotter pin.
    When tightened, the adjusting sleeve bolts, nuts and clamps must be positioned within 45 degrees of vertical. The threaded ends of the adjusting sleeve bolts should point towards the front of the vehicle.
