- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Timing Chain Cover & Seal, Removal & Installation.-
- Remove the crankshaft sensor ring from the crankshaft.
- Rotate the crankshaft until the timing mark on the RH camshaft sprocket is approximately at the 11 o'clock position and the timing mark on the LH camshaft sprocket is approximately at the 1 o'clock position.
- Install the Camshaft Aligner and Camshaft Pulley Aligner on the camshaft.
WARNINGIf one or both of the tensioner mounting bolts are loosened or removed, the tensioner-sealing bead must be inspected for seal integrity. If cracks, tears or separation from the tensioner body or permanent compression of the seal bead is observed, install a new tensioner or engine damage may occur.
- Remove the bolts, timing chain tensioners and timing chain tensioner arms.
- Remove the timing chains and crankshaft sprocket.
- Remove the mounting bolts and remove the timing chain guides.
To install:
WARNING
Timing chain procedures must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result.
WARNING
Prior to installation, inspect the tensioner-sealing bead for seal integrity. If cracks, tears, separation from the tensioner body or permanent compression of the seal bead is observed, install a new tensioner.
- Compress the tensioner plunger, using a vise.
- Install a retaining clip on the tensioner to hold the plunger in during installation.
- If the copper links are not visible, mark one link on one end and one link on the other end, and use as timing marks.
- Install the crankshaft sprocket, making sure the flange faces forward.
- Position the left timing chain guide.
- Install and tighten the left bolts. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Position the right timing chain guide.
- Install and tighten the right bolts. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
WARNINGUnless otherwise instructed, do not rotate either the crankshaft or the camshafts, when the timing chains are removed and the cylinder heads are installed. Severe piston and valve damage will occur.
NOTEThe number one cylinder is at top dead center (TDC) when the stud on the engine block fits into the slot in the handle of the special tool.
- Using the Crankshaft Holding Tool, position the crankshaft so the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC .
- Remove the Crankshaft Holding Tool.
- Position the LH (inner) timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket, aligning the copper (marked) link with the timing mark on the sprocket.
- Install the LH timing chain on the camshaft sprocket, aligning the copper (marked) link with the timing marks on the sprocket.
- Position the LH timing chain tensioner arm on the dowel pin and install the LH timing chain tensioner and the 2 bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Remove the retaining clip from the LH timing chain tensioner.
- Position the RH (outer) timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket, aligning the copper (marked) link with the timing mark on the sprocket.
- Install the RH timing chain on the camshaft sprocket, aligning the copper (marked) link with the timing marks on the sprocket.
- Position the RH timing chain tensioner arm on the dowel pin and install the RH timing chain tensioner and the 2 bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Remove the retaining clip from the RH timing chain tensioner.
- Make sure that the copper (marked) chain links are lined up with the dots on the crankshaft sprockets and the camshaft sprocket.
- Remove the Camshaft Aligner and Camshaft Pulley Aligner from the camshaft.
- Install the crankshaft sensor ring on the crankshaft.
- Install the engine front cover.
- Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
Specific to:
Ford E-350 Super Duty 2008-2009
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Timing Chain Cover & Seal, Removal & Installation.-
- Remove the crankshaft sensor ring from the crankshaft.
- Remove the balance shaft. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Balance Shaft, Removal & Installation.-
- Position the crankshaft with the keyway at the 12 o'clock position.
- Install and carefully tighten the Camshaft Position Aligner on the camshafts.
- Remove the 2 bolts, the LH timing chain tensioner and tensioner arm.
- Remove the 2 bolts, the RH timing chain tensioner and tensioner arm.
- Remove the LH and RH timing chains and the crankshaft sprockets.
- Remove the 4 bolts and the timing chain guides.
- Remove the 2 bolts, flat washers, camshaft sprockets and RH camshaft spacer.
To install:
WARNING
Timing chain procedures must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result.
- Compress the tensioner plunger, using a vise.
- Install a retaining clip on the tensioner to hold the plunger in during installation.
- If copper links are not visible, mark 2 links on one end and 1 link on the other end, and use as timing marks.
- Install the RH camshaft spacer ring, both camshaft sprockets, flat washers and tighten the bolts in 2 stages.
- Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
- Tighten an additional 90°
- Install the timing chain guides and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Preposition the camshafts:
- Rotate the LH camshaft until the timing mark is approximately at 12 o'clock.
- Tighten the Camshaft Position Aligner to maintain camshaft prepositioning.
- Rotate the RH camshaft until the timing mark is approximately at 11 o'clock.
- Tighten the Camshaft Position Aligner to maintain camshaft prepositioning.
- Position the crankshaft with the Crankshaft Holding Tool, then remove the tool.
- Install the crankshaft sprocket, making sure the flange faces forward.
- Install the lower end of the LH timing chain, aligning the timing marks.
- Install the LH timing chain on the camshaft sprocket with the 2 chain (marked) links and the timing marks aligned.
WARNINGThe camshaft sprocket can jump time causing engine damage if the Crankshaft Holding Tool is not secured.
NOTEBe sure the chain link and crankshaft sprocket timing marks are aligned.
NOTEThe lower half of the timing chain must be positioned above the dowel. - Install the RH (outer) timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket.
- Position the timing chain on the camshaft sprocket. Make sure the 2 copper-colored (marked) links align with the camshaft sprocket timing mark.
NOTEThe LH timing chain tensioner arm has a bump near the dowel hole, for identification. - Position the LH and RH timing chain tensioner arms on the dowel pins and install the timing chain tensioners and tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Remove the retaining clips from the RH and LH timing chain tensioners.
- Check for correct alignment of all timing marks.
- Remove the Camshaft Position Aligner from the camshafts.
- Install the crankshaft sensor ring on the crankshaft.
- Install the balance shaft.
- Install engine front cover.
