Accessory Drive Belts Replacing on Dodge Stratus?

The Accessory drive belt also known as Serpentine belt. The procedure to replace Drive belt.

Please Note that this Procedure Covers all U.S. and Canadian models of the Chrysler/Dodge Avenger, Chrysler Sebring Coupe and Dodge Stratus/ Stratus Coupe models for Year 1999 to 2005.

The Below mentioned procedure is similar for all this car brands and models.

In this chapter the details are provided for 2.0L, 2.4L and 2.5L Engine drive belts.

The drive belt Adjustment, inspection, routing diagram and replacing procedure.

The procedure starts here:

Removal & Installation Procedure for Drive belt:---

2.0L And 2.4L Engines
A/C & Alternator Belt
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  3. Insert a 3 / 8 - drive breaker bar into the square opening of the belt tensioner pivot bracket.
    WARNING
Do not use excessive force to over compress belt tensioner. This may result in damage to the belt tensioner.
  4. Gently apply a force to rotate belt tensioner clockwise until the belt tensioner bottoms out and the belt can be removed from pulleys.
  5. Remove the belt.
  6. Gently release tensioner.
To install:

NOTE
When installing drive belt onto pulleys, make sure that belt is properly routed and all V-grooves make proper contact with pulley.

  1. Install the belt over all pulleys except for the air conditioning compressor pulley.
  2. Insert a 3 / 8 - drive breaker bar into the square opening of the belt tensioner pivot bracket.
  3. Gently apply a force to rotate belt tensioner clockwise until the belt tensioner bottoms out and the belt can be installed onto air conditioning compressor pulley.
  4. Install the belt over air conditioning compressor pulley.
  5. Release spring tension onto belt.
  6. Remove the breaker bar from belt tensioner pivot bracket.
  7. Install the belt splash shield and right front wheel.

Adjustment

Used belts are belts that have been running on the engine for at least 15 minutes

2.0L, 2.4L And 2.5L Engines

To obtain proper belt tension of conventional V-belts and Poly-ribbed belts use belt tensioning gauge Special Tool 7198.

New Belts:

A/C & Alternator: 150 lbs. (667 N)
Power Steering Pump: 130 lbs. (578 N)

Used Belts:

A/C & Alternator: 80 lbs. (356 N)
Power Steering Pump: 80 lbs. (356 N)

NOTE: The poly-ribbed belt for the A/C and alternator is automatically tensioned via the automatic belt tensioner. No further tensioning is required.

Alternator Belt

Use a tension gauge to measure the belt tension or apply a force of 98 N (22 lbs.) to the mid-point of the belt between the generator pulley and crankshaft pulley and measure deflection. Deflection should be 0.35-0.47 inch (9.0-12.0mm). If using a tension gauge, tension should be 90-110 lbs. (400-490 N).

Power Steering Belt
With A/C

Use a tension gauge to measure the belt tension or apply a force of 98 N (22 lbs.) to the mid-point of the belt between the generator pulley and crankshaft pulley and measure deflection. Deflection should be 0.39-0.43 inch (10-11mm). If using a tension gauge, belt tension should be 92.6-114.6 lbs. (412-510 N).

Without A/C

Use a tension gauge to measure the belt tension or apply a force of 98 N (22 lbs.) to the mid-point of the belt between the generator pulley and crankshaft pulley and measure deflection. Deflection should be 0.43-0.55 inch (11-14mm). If using a tension gauge, belt tension should be 90-110 lbs. (400-489 N).

2.4L Engines:-

Alternator & Water Pump Belt

NOTE
The temperature of the belt surface should be as close as possible to underhood operating temperature.
Apply 22 lbs. (98 N) of force to the middle of the drive belt between the pulleys (at the place indicated by the arrow) and check that the amount of tension is within 88-132 lbs. (392-598 N).

If a belt tension gauge is not available, apply 22 lbs. (98 N) of force to the middle of the drive belt between the pulleys (at the place indicated by the arrow) and check that the amount of deflection is between 0.27-0.34 inches (6.9-8.5mm).

Power Steering Pump & A/C Compressor Drive Belt Tension Inspection

Apply 22 lbs. (98 N) of force to the middle of the drive belt between the pulleys (at the place indicated by the arrow) and check that the amount of tension is within 88-132 lbs. (392-598 N).

If a belt tension gauge is not available, apply 22 lbs. (98 N) of force to the middle of the drive belt between the pulleys (at the place indicated by the arrow) and check that the amount of deflection is between 0.27-0.34 inches (6.9-8.5mm).

---------------
2.5L Engines

  2. With the tensioner pulley fixing nut temporarily tightened to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm), set the belt tension or deflection amount to the standard value using the adjusting bolt.
  3. Tighten the tension pulley fixing nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).

Alternator And Power Steering Drive Belt
  1. Loosen alternator top mounting ear bolt
  2. Loosen pivot bolt, but do not remove.
  3. Loosen adjusting bolt on idler to allow removal of the alternator drive belt.

THE DIAGRAMS SHOWN IN THIS CHAPTER ARE COMMON FOR ALL THREE ENGINE MODELS.
2.0L Engine diagrams is similar for both 2.4L and 2.5L.

Belt Tension Inspection:

Check the accessory drive belts for evidence of damage, cuts, cracks or any unusual wear and replace if necessary.
Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.
