Valve Covers Removal on Dodge RAM?

The Procedure to replace Valve Covers on Dodge RAM Truck.

Removal & Installation



3.7L & 4.7L Engines
Left Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  3. Remove the resonator assemble and air inlet hose.
  4. Disconnect injector connectors and un-clip the injector harness.
  5. Route injector harness in front of cylinder head cover.
  6. Disconnect the left side breather tube and remove the breather tube.
  7. Remove the cylinder head cover mounting bolts.
  8. Remove cylinder head cover and gasket.
    NOTE
    The gasket may be used again, providing no cuts, tears, or deformation has occurred.
To install:

WARNING
Do not use harsh cleaners to clean the cylinder head covers. Severe damage to covers may occur.

  1. Clean cylinder head cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
  2. Install cylinder head cover.
  3. Tighten cylinder head cover bolts and double ended studs to 105 in. lbs. (12 Nm).
  4. Install left side breather and connect breather tube.
  5. Connect injector electrical connectors and injector harness retaining clips.
  6. Install the resonator and air inlet hose.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove air cleaner assembly, resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  4. Drain cooling system to a level below the heater hoses.
  5. Remove accessory drive belt.
  6. Remove air conditioning compressor retaining bolts and move compressor to the left.
  7. Remove heater hoses.
  8. Disconnect injector and ignition coil connectors.
  9. Disconnect and remove positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose.
  10. Remove oil fill tube.
  11. Un-clip injector and ignition coil harness and move away from cylinder head cover.
  12. Remove right rear breather tube and filter assembly.
  13. Remove cylinder head cover retaining bolts.
  14. Remove cylinder head cover.
To install:
  1. Clean cylinder head cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
  2. Tighten cylinder head cover bolts and double ended studs to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  3. Install right rear breather tube and filter assembly.
  4. Connect injector, ignition coil electrical connectors and harness retaining clips.
  5. Install the oil fill tube.
  6. Install PCV hose.
  7. Install heater hoses.
  8. Install air conditioning compressor retaining bolts.
  9. Install accessory drive belt.
  10. Fill the cooling system.
  11. Install air cleaner assembly, resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  12. Connect battery negative cable.
5.7L (MDS) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Disconnect ignition coil connector.
  4. Remove ignition coil retaining bolts.
  5. Remove ignition coil.
  6. Remove cylinder head cover retaining bolts.
  7. Remove cylinder head cover
To install:

WARNING
Do not use harsh cleaners to clean the cylinder head covers. Severe damage to covers may occur.

  1. Clean cylinder head cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
  2. Install cylinder head cover and hand start all fasteners. Verify that all double ended studs are in the correct location.
  3. Tighten cylinder head cover bolts and double ended studs to 70 inch. lbs. (8Nm). Begin torque sequence in the middle of head cover and tighten bolts moving outward in a crisscross pattern from top to bottom.

  4. Before installing coil(s), apply dielectric grease to inside of spark plug boots.
  5. Install ignition coils. Tighten fasteners to 62 lbs inch. (7Nm).
  6. Connect ignition coil electrical connectors.
  7. Install PCV hose.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
5.7L (SMPI) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Disconnect coil on plug connectors.
    WARNING
    The ground straps must be installed in the same location as removed. The covers are machined to accept the ground straps in those locations only.
  4. Remove cylinder head cover retaining bolts, and ground straps.
  5. Remove cylinder head cover.
    NOTE
    The gasket may be used again, provided no cuts, tears, or deformation has occurred.
To install:

WARNING

  1. Clean cylinder head cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
  2. Install cylinder head cover and hand start all fasteners. Verify that all double ended studs are in the correct location and install left and right ground straps.
    NOTE
    The right hand ground strap is located on the front inboard stud. The left hand ground strap is located on the rear inboard stud. The ground straps must be installed in the same location as removed. The covers are machined to accept the ground straps in those locations only.
  3. Tighten cylinder head cover bolts and double ended studs to 70 in. lbs. (8 Nm). Begin torque sequence in the middle of head cover and torque bolts moving outward in a crisscross pattern from top to bottom.

  4. Install ignition coil on plug, and tighten fasteners to 105 inch. lbs. (12 Nm).
  5. Connect, ignition coil electrical connectors.
  6. Install PCV hose.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
5.9L Diesel Engine
Early Design
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect both battery negative cables.
  3. Remove oil fill cap.
  4. Remove the breather cover.
  5. Disconnect the breather hose and breather drain tube from the breather housing.
  6. Remove cylinder head cover bolts.
  7. Remove the cylinder head cover.
    NOTE
    Verify cylinder head ground spring is still properly retained in cylinder head cover.
To install:
  1. Inspect cylinder head cover gasket for cuts and proper installation in groove. Replace if damaged.
  2. Position cylinder cover on top of rocker housing.
    NOTE
    Inspect rubber isolators and replace if damaged.
  3. Install bolts. Starting with the center bolt, torque to18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  4. Install breather hose to breather.
  5. Install breather drain hose to breather.
  6. Install breather cover and wire harness clip. Torque to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
Late Design
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Disconnect the breather tube and breather drain tube from the cylinder head cover.
  4. Remove the cylinder head cover bolts.
  5. Remove the cylinder head cover
To install:

  1. Position cylinder head cover on top of cylinder head cover gasket.
  2. Install bolts finger tight.
  3. Starting with the center bolt, torque bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  4. Install breather tube to cylinder head cover.
  5. Install breather drain tube to cylinder head cover.
6.7L Diesel Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect both negative battery cables.
  3. Remove the breather cover cap screws (8-M6 screws).
  4. Remove the CCV breather and filter cover.
  5. Disconnect CCV Tube at the CDR valve (one spring clamp) and remove 10mm nut from tube bracket at EGR Cooler support bracket stud.
  6. Disconnect CDR valve tube to air inlet silencer (Spring Clamp).
  7. Disconnect CDR/Valve cover pressure sensor connector.
  8. Remove Oil fill cap.
  9. Remove CCV oil drains from valve cover (2 hoses).
  10. Disconnect both injector harness connectors.
  11. Remove six (6) valve cover caps crews (10mm).
  12. Remove the valve cover.
  13. Loosen injector wire nuts from the valve cover gasket (8mm)
  14. Remove gasket.
To install:

NOTE
Gasket must be completely dry and free of oil before installation.

  1. Wipe oil from the valve cover gasket, rocker box, and valve cover.
  2. Inspect valve cover gasket for tears, or splits. Replace if necessary.
  3. Install the valve cover gasket on the rocker box.
  4. Install the injector nuts (8 mm) to injector studs. Torque to 11 in. lbs. 1.25 Nm (1.25 Nm).
  5. Install valve cover and valve cover cap screws (10mm). Tighten screws from center out to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6. Install the valve cover CCV drain hoses.
  7. Remove any oil from the CCV seal area and install the CCV filter.
  8. Install the CCV cover and cap screws (6mm). Tighten to 89 in. lbs. (10 Nm).
  9. Connect CDR valve tube to Air Inlet Silencer (spring clamps).
  10. Connect the Breather/Valve Cover Pressure sensor.
  11. Install oil fill cap.
  12. Connect the batteries.
  13. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
