Replace Turn Signal Switch?

On Cadillac Car models 1990 to 1998 the procedure is for
GM Cadillac Deville/Fleetwood/ELDORADO/Seville car models.

In this chapter the details are mentioned for replace turn signal switch for above mentioned late and early Cadillac car models.

The procedure with details and diagrams is as follows:-----

Deville, Eldorado, Seville, and Fleetwood-Early Models
  1. Disable the SIR system.
    1. On Deville and Fleetwood, remove the left lower sound insulator. On Eldorado and Seville, remove the left side sound insulator.
    2. Remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and detach the yellow 2-way connector at the base of the steering column.
    3. Remove the steering wheel.
    4. Make sure the ignition switch is in the LOCK position to prevent the SIR coil assembly from going off-center.
  2. Remove the SIR coil assembly retaining ring and the coil assembly. Allow the coil to hang freely.

WARNING
The SIR coil assembly will become off-center if the steering column is separated from the steering gear and is allowed to rotate or if the centering spring is pushed down, letting the hub rotate while the coil is removed from the column.

  1. Remove the wave washer.
  2. Use tool J-23653-C or equivalents, to depress the shaft lock, then remove and discard the shaft lock retaining ring.
  3. Remove the shaft lock.
  4. Remove the turn signal canceling cam assembly.
  5. Remove the upper bearing spring, upper bearing inner race seat and inner race.
  6. Move the turn signal switch to the RIGHT TURN position.
  7. On Deville, Fleetwood, and 1990 Eldorado, and Seville, remove the multi-function turn signal lever as follows:
    1. Make sure the lever is in the OFF position.
    2. Remove the access cover from the steering column housing.
    3. Detach the cruise control wiring connector. Note the position of the connector when installed in the column.
    4. Pull the lever straight out of the turn signal switch.
  8. On Eldorado and Seville, remove the multi-function turn signal lever as follows:
    1. On 1992-93 vehicles, slide the connector cover toward the front of the vehicle.
    2. Unplug the electrical connector. On 1991 vehicles, note the position of the connector when installed in the column.
    3. Push the lever straight in, rotate clockwise 1 / 4 turn and pull the lever out of the switch.
  9. On Deville, Fleetwood, and Eldorado and Seville, remove the screw, button, spring, and hazard warning switch knob.
  10. On Deville and Fleetwood, remove the one signal switch arm retaining screw. On Eldorado and Seville, remove the 2 signal switch arm retaining screws. Remove the signal switch arm.
  11. Remove the turn signal switch retaining screws.
  12. Remove the wiring protector and detach the turn signal switch connector.
  13. Gently pull the wire harness through the column and remove the turn signal switch.
To install:
  1. Route the turn signal switch wire harness through the column and attach the electrical connector. Install the wiring connector.
  2. Position the turn signal switch and install the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 30 inch lbs. (3.4 Nm).
  3. If equipped, install the signal switch arm and tighten the retaining screw(s) to 20 inch lbs. (2.3 Nm).
  4. If removed, install the hazard warning switch knob, spring, button, and screw.
  5. On 1991-93 Eldorado and Seville, install the multi-function turn signal lever as follows:
    1. Route the harness and attach the electrical connector.
    2. Push the lever straight in and rotate counterclockwise 1 / 4 turn to lock into position.
    3. On 1992-93 vehicles, reposition the connector cover.
  6. On Deville, Fleetwood, and 1990 Eldorado and Seville, install the multi-function turn signal lever as follows:

  1. Install the wave washer.
  2. If the SIR coil is off-center, proceed as follows:
    1. On early Deville, Fleetwood, Eldorado, and Seville, set the steering shaft so that the block teeth on the upper steering shaft are at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions. The alignment mark at the end of the shaft should be at the 12 o'clock position and the vehicle wheels straight ahead. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

  1. On late model Deville, Fleetwood, Eldorado, and Seville, set the steering shaft so that the block tooth on the upper steering shaft is at the 12 o'clock position. The vehicle wheels should be straight ahead. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  2. Remove the SIR coil assembly.

  1. Hold the coil assembly with the clear bottom up to see the coil ribbon. There are 2 different types of coils: one rotates clockwise and the other rotates counterclockwise.
  2. While holding the coil assembly, depress the spring lock to rotate the hub in the direction of the arrow until it stops. The coil ribbon should be wound up snug against the center hub.
  3. Rotate the coil hub in the opposite direction approximately 2 1 / 2 turns. Release the spring lock between the locking tabs in front of the arrow.

NOTE
If a new SIR coil assembly is being installed, assemble the pre-centered coil assembly to the steering column. Remove the centering tab and dispose.

  1. Install the SIR fuse.
  2. Connect the negative battery cable.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to RUN . Verify that the "INFLATABLE RESTRAINT" indicator light flashes 7-9 times and then remains OFF. If the light does not function as specified, there is a fault in the SIR system.
Deville, Eldorado, and Fleetwood-Late Models
  1. Disable the SIR system.
  2. Remove the inflator module and the steering wheel.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Remove the coil assembly retaining ring. Remove the SIR coil assembly and allow it to hang freely.
  5. Remove the wave washer.
  6. Install special tool J 23653-C to push down the shaft lock and remove the shaft lock-bearing retainer.
  7. Remove the shaft lock, the special tool, the turn signal canceling cam assembly, and the upper bearing spring.

NOTE
Set the steering shaft so that block tooth on the upper steering shaft is at the 12 o'clock position, the wheels on the vehicle should be straight ahead, then set the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position, to ensure no damage will occur to the coil.

  1. Install the wave washer.

WARNING
The SIR coil assembly wires must be kept tight with no slack while installing the SIR coil assembly. Failure to do so may cause wires to be kinked near the shaft lock area and cut when the steering wheel is turned.
