How to replace Compressor on Chevrolet Malibu?

In this chapter details are provided to replace AC compressor.
The Chevy Malibu Compressor replacing procedure is as follows:-----


Removal & Installation Procedure for


  • 2.2L (L61) ENGINE.
  • 3.5L (LZ4) & 3.9L (LZ9) ENGINES.

2.2L (L61) Engine


  1. Recover the refrigerant.
  2. Raise the vehicle.
  3. Remove the right front fender liner.
  4. Remove the right radiator air deflector retainers.
  5. Remove the right radiator air deflector.
  6. Remove the engine drive belt.
  7. Remove the compressor hose nut from the compressor.
  8. Remove the compressor hose from the compressor. Cap A/C components.

  9. Remove the compressor wire harness connector.
  10. Remove the 2 compressor mounting bolts and 1 mounting nut.
  11. Remove the compressor. 
    NOTE
    Cap all A/C components immediately to prevent system contamination.

  12. Remove and discard the sealing washers
To install:

NOTE
If replacing the compressor, refer to Compressor Oil Balancing.

  1. Uncap A/C components.
  2. Install new sealing washers.
  3. Install the compressor.
  4. Install the compressor mounting bolts and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  5. Install the compressor wire harness connector.
  6. Install the compressor hose to the compressor.
  7. Install the compressor hose nut to the compressor and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  8. Install the engine drive belt.
    WARNING
    Radiator air deflectors must be properly installed or reduced A/C and engine cooling system performance could occur.
  9. Install the right radiator air deflector.
  10. Install the right radiator air deflector retainers.
  11. Install the right front fender liner.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Evacuate and charge the A/C system.
  14. Leak test the fittings.

3.5L (LZ4) & 3.9L (LZ9) Engines



  1. Recover the refrigerant.
  2. Remove the drive belt.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the right front fender liner.
  5. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  6. Remove the compressor hose nut from the compressor.
  7. Remove the compressor hose from the compressor. Cap A/C components.
  8. Remove and discard sealing washers.
  9. Remove A/C compressor bolts.
  10. Remove the A/C compressor.

To install:

NOTE
If replacing the compressor, refer to Compressor Oil Balancing.

  1. Install the A/C compressor.
  2. Install A/C compressor mounting bolts and nut tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  3. Uncap A/C components.
  4. Install new sealing washers.
  5. Install the compressor hose to the compressor. Tighten the hose mounting nut to 15 ft. (20 Nm).
  6. Reconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  7. Install the right front fender liner.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Install the drive belt.
  10. Evacuate and charge the A/C system.
  11. Leak test the fittings.
