How To Replace Timing Chain on Toyota Tacoma?

In this chapter the timing belt replacing procedure is provided for Toyota Tacoma.
Proper step by step instructions with diagrams are provided for more help.

The timing chain and sprockets replacing procedure is as follows:-----


2WD
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable. Remove the battery.
Drain the engine coolant. Drain the engine oil.
Remove the engine from the vehicle and position it in a suitable holding fixture.
Remove the oil level gauge guide. Remove the water inlet. Remove the belt tensioner.
Remove the idler pulley number two subassembly. Remove the idler pulley number one sub assembly. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
Remove the lower oil pan. Remove the strainer and pickup tube. Remove the upper oil pan.
Remove the intake manifold. Remove the ignition coil assembly. Remove the cylinder head cover. Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.
Remove the VVT sensor. Remove the oil filter bracket subassembly.
Remove the timing chain case cover retaining bolts. Remove the cover from the engine. Remove the O-ring from the left cylinder head.
NOTE
Carefully remove the cover by prying between the cover and the cylinder head or block with a suitable tool. Be sure to cover the tip of the suitable tool prior to usage. Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder block, cylinder head and timing chain cover.

Using the crankshaft pulley set bolt, turn the crankshaft to align the crankshaft set key with the timing line of the cylinder block. If not aligned at TDC of the compression stroke, turn the crankshaft one complete revolution, in the direction of rotation
While turning the stopper plate of the tensioner upward, push the plunger of the chain tensioner. While turning the stopper plate of the tensioner downward, insert a 0.138 inch diameter bar into the holes in the stopper plate and tensioner to hold the stopper plate.
Remove the two bolts, and then remove the chain tensioner.
Remove the chain tensioner slipper. Remove the idle gear shaft number two, idle gear number one and idle gear shaft number one.
Remove the number two chain vibration damper. Remove the timing chain subassembly.

To install:

Install the chain tensioner slipper.
While turning the stopper plate of the tensioner clockwise, push in the plunger of the chain tensioner. While turning the stopper plate of the tensioner counterclockwise, insert a 0.138 inch diameter bar into the holes in the stopper plate and tensioner to hold the stopper plate.
Install the chain tensioner. Tighten the bolts to 7.4 ft. lbs.
Position the engine at TDC on the compression stroke. Align the camshaft timing gears and bearing caps. Using the crankshaft pulley set bolt, align the crankshaft set key with the timing line of the cylinder.

Align the yellow mark line with the timing mark of the crankshaft timing link. Align the orange mark links with the timing marks of the camshaft timing gears, and install the chain.
Install the number two chain vibration damper.
Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the rotating surface of the idle gear shaft number one.
Temporarily install the idle gear shaft number one together with idle gear shaft number two, while aligning the knock pin of idle gear shaft number one with the knock pin groove of the cylinder block.
NOTE
Be care of the idle gear direction.

Tighten the idle gear shaft number two to 44 ft. lbs. Remove the bar from the chain tensioner.
Install a new front case oil seal. Install a new O-ring onto the left cylinder head.
Apply continuous beads (0.12-0.16 inch in diameter) of seal packing, part number 08826-00080 or equivalent to the four locations shown in the illustration.
Apply continuous beads (0.12-0.16 inch in diameter) of seal packing, part number 08826-00080 or equivalent to all parts except the water pump part: for the water pump part use, part number 08826-00080 or equivalent, to the timing chain cover. Do not apply seal packing to portion -A-.
NOTE
Remove any oil from the contact surfaces. Install the timing chain case cover within three minutes and tighten the bolts within fifteen minutes of applying the seal packing.

Align the key way of the oil pump drive motor with the rectangular portion of the crankshaft timing gear and slide the timing chain case cover into place.
Install the timing chain case cover bolts. Tighten the bolts and nuts uniformly in several steps to 17 ft. lbs.
NOTE
Do not wrap the chain and slipper over the timing chain case cover seal line.

Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
When installing the cylinder head cover apply a continuous bead (0.08-0.12 inch) of seal packing, part number 08826-00080 or equivalent, to the cylinder head. Install the seal washers onto the bolts. Install the cylinder head cover bolts and nuts. Tighten bolts -A- to 7.4 ft. lbs. Tighten bolts -B- to 80 inch lbs. Tighten nuts to 80 inch lbs.
NOTE
Be sure to remove any oil from the contact surfaces of the cylinder head cover and the cylinder head. Install the cover within three minutes after applying the seal packing. Tighten the bolts to specification within fifteen minutes after installing the cover. Do not add engine oil for at least two hours after installing the cover.

Be sure to fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine coolant.
Be sure to fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine oil.
Start the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.


4wd & Prerunner:--
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable. Remove the battery.
Drain the engine coolant. Drain the engine oil.
Remove the power steering gear assembly.
If equipped with 4WD, remove the front differential carrier assembly.
Remove the V bank cover. Remove the radiator support to frame seal, left side. Remove the fan shroud.
Remove the air cleaner assembly. Remove the oil level gauge. Remove the water inlet.
Separate the vane pump assembly. Remove the alternator. Remove the air conditioning compressor and position it to the side.
Remove the belt tensioner assembly. Remove the idler pulley number two subassembly. Remove the idler pulley number one subassembly. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
Remove the lower oil pan. Remove the oil strainer and pickup tube assembly. Remove the upper oil pan.
Remove the intake manifold. Remove the ignition coil assembly. Remove the cylinder head cover assembly.
Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Remove the VVT sensor. Remove the oil filter bracket subassembly.
NOTE
Carefully remove the cover by prying between the cover and the cylinder head or block with a suitable tool. Be sure to cover the tip of the suitable tool prior to usage. Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder block, cylinder head and timing chain cover.

1. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   Engine undercover
   

   Engine oil
   

   On 4WD vehicles, the front differential
   

   Alternator belt, fan with coupling and the water pump pulley
   

   Cylinder head
   

   A/C belt, compressor, and the bracket
   

   Alternator adjusting bar and bracket
   

   Crankshaft position sensor and O-ring

2. On the 2.4L remove the crankshaft position sensor rotor and the timing chain oil jet.
3. On the 2.7L, remove the No. 2 and No. 3 vibration dampers and the No. 2 chain tensioner as follows:
   1. Install a pin in the No. 2 tensioner and lock the plunger.
   2. Remove the bolt and the No. 2 damper.
   3. Remove the 2 bolts and the No. 3 damper.
   4. Remove the nut and the No. 2 tensioner.

4. Remove the balance shaft driven gear, shaft, No. 2 timing chain and the No. 2 crankshaft sprocket, as follows:
   1. Unbolt the balance shaft driven gear.
   2. Remove the balance shaft gear with the shaft.
   3. Remove the No. 2 timing chain with the No. 2 crankshaft timing sprocket.
      
      
      Remove the No. 4 vibration damper.
      

To install:

Fig. Measure the length of 16 links with the timing chain fully stretched. The no.1 chain should be 147.5mm (5.807 in.) max.; the no.2 chain should be 123.6mm (4.866 in.) max. If not, replace the chain.-2.4L and 2.7L (3RZ-FE/M) engines

1. Check that the No.1 cylinder is at TDC and the weights of the N0.1 and No.2 balance shafts are at the bottom.

2. Install the No. 4 vibration dampener.
3. Install the No. 2 timing chain, No. 2 crankshaft timing sprocket, balance shaft drive gear and shaft as follows:
   1. Install the No. 2 chain by matching the marked links with the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket and balance shaft timing sprocket.
   2. Fit the other marked link of the No. 2 chain onto the sprocket behind the large timing mark of the balance shaft gear.
   3. Insert the balance shaft gear shaft through the balance shaft drive gear so that it fits into the thrust plate hole. Align the small timing mark of the balance shaft drive gear with the timing mark of the balance shaft timing gear.
   4. Install the bolt to the balance shaft gear and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
   5. Check each timing mark is matched with the corresponding mark link.
4. Install the No. 2, No. 3 vibration dampers and the No. 2 chain tensioner, as follows:
   
   NOTE

   Assemble the chain tensioner with the pin installed, then remove the pin after assembly.
   
   
   1. Install the No. 2 chain tensioner with the nut, tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
   2. Install the No. 3 damper with the bolts, tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
   3. Install the No. 2 damper, tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
   4. Remove the pin from the No. 2 chain tensioner and free the plunger.
5. On the 2.4L, install the crankshaft position sensor rotor and the timing chain oil jet.

6. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   No. 1 timing chain tensioner slipper and the No. 1 vibration damper. Torque the No. 1 damper to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm); torque the slipper to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Check that the slipper moves smoothly.
   

   Crankshaft timing gear.
   

   No. 1 timing chain and camshaft timing gear.
   
7. Align the timing mark between the marked link of the No. 1 timing chain, and install the No. 1 timing chain to the gear.
8. Align the timing mark of the crankshaft timing gear with the mark of the No. 1 timing chain, then install the No. 1 timing chain.
9. Tie the No. 1 chain with a wire or cord, make sure it does not come loose.
10. Install or connect the following:
    
    
    Timing chain cover assembly
    
11. Tighten the following:

    12mm B bolts-18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)

12. Attach the water bypass pipe.
13. Remove the cord or wire from the chain.
14. Install or connect the following:
    
    
    Crankshaft pulley, tighten the bolt to 193 ft. lbs. (260 Nm). On A/C vehicles, install the crankshaft pulleys with bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    

    Oil strainer, tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
    

    Oil pan, tighten the mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm)
    

    Flywheel housing undercover and dust seal
    

    Stiffener plates on 2WD vehicles, tighten to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
    

    Crankshaft position sensor with a new O-ring
    

    Alternator, adjusting bar and bracket
    

    A/C compressor and bracket
    

    Cylinder head
    

    Water pump pulley and the fluid coupling with the fan
    

    On 4WD vehicles, the front differential and driveshaft assemblies
    
15. Adjust the drive belt tension.
16. Fill with engine coolant and engine oil.
17. Install the engine undercover.
18. Connect the negative battery cable.

2TR-FE Engine

1. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
   2. Remove the engine and position it in a suitable holding fixture.
   3. Remove the air intake connector. Remove the alternator.
   4. Remove the belt tensioner assembly. Remove the number one idler pulley subassembly. Remove the air conditioning idler pulley assembly and bracket.
   5. Remove the crankshaft position sensor. Remove the camshaft position sensor.
   6. Remove the intake manifold. Remove the cylinder head cover.
   7. Position the engine at TDC of the compression stroke. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
   8. Remove the oil level gauge subassembly. Remove the lower oil pan. Remove the oil strainer assembly. Remove the upper oil pan.
   9. Remove the two nuts and separate the water bypass pipe number one.
   10. Remove the nineteen bolts and two nuts retaining the timing chain case cover to its mounting. Remove the timing chain case cover from the engine.
       
       NOTE

       Carefully remove the cover by prying between the cover and the cylinder head or block with a suitable tool. Be sure to cover the tip of the suitable tool prior to usage. Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder block, cylinder head and timing chain cover.
   11. Make sure that each matchmark is in the same position as shown in the illustration. Remove the two bolts, timing chain guide and O-ring.

   12. Move the stopper plate upward to release the lock, and push the plunger deep into the tensioner.
   13. Move the stopper plate downward to set the lock. Insert a 0.118 inch diameter bar into the stopper plate hole. Remove the bolt, nut, number one chain tensioner and gasket.
       
       NOTE

       When the number one chain tensioner is removed do not rotate the crankshaft. When the chain is removed and the camshaft needs to be rotated, rotate the crankshaft 90 degrees to the right.
   14. Remove the bolt and chain tensioner slipper. Remove the two bolts and remove the number one chain vibration damper. Remove the primary timing chain subassembly.
   15. Remove the crankshaft timing gear or sprocket. Remove the bolt and remove the number two chain vibration damper.
   16. Remove the two bolts and remove the number three chain vibration damper.
   17. Remove the nut and the number two chain tensioner assembly. Remove the bolt, balance shaft drive gear shaft and balance shaft drive gear. Remove the crankshaft timing sprocket number two and chain.
   To install:
   1. Install the chain with its marks aligned with the timing marks on the crankshaft timing sprocket and balance shaft timing sprocket.
   2. Bring the other mark link of the crankshaft timing sprocket behind the large timing mark of the balance shaft drive gear.
   3. Insert the balance shaft drive gear shaft through the balance shaft drive gear so that it fits into the thrust plate hole.
   4. Align the small timing mark of the balance shaft drive gear with the timing mark of the balance shaft timing gear.
   5. Install the bolt onto the balance shaft drive gear and tighten it to 18 ft. lbs.
   6. Check that the timing mark is aligned with the corresponding mark link.

   7. Install the number two chain tensioner assembly. Tighten the nut to 13 ft. lbs.
      
      NOTE

      Assemble the chain tensioner with the 0.118 inch diameter bar installed, then remove the bar after assembly. When doing this avoid pushing the vibration damper against the chain.
   8. Install the number three chain vibration damper with the two bolts. Tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs.
   9. Install the chain vibration damper number two bolt and tighten it to 20 ft. lbs. Remove the pin from the chain tensioner and release the plunger.
   10. Install the crankshaft timing gear or sprocket.
   11. Install the number one chain vibration damper bolt and nut. Tighten to 15 ft. lbs.
   12. Install the primary timing chain onto the sprocket and gear with the painted marks aligned with the timing marks on the sprocket and gear.
       
       NOTE

       The camshaft mark plate is orange. The crankshaft mark plate is yellow.
   13. Use a rope to tie the chain of the crankshaft timing sprocket. Tie the rope near the sprocket.
       
       NOTE

       After the chain tensioner has been installed, remove the rope. The rope is used to prevent gear jumping.
   14. Install the tensioner slipper and tighten the bolt to 15 ft. lbs.
   15. Install the number one chain tensioner assembly, using a new gasket. Tighten the bolts to 7 ft. lbs.
   16. Install a new front case oil seal. Install the thermostat. Install the water inlet.
   17. Apply adhesive, part number 08833-00070 or equivalent to the head straight screw plug. Install the plug and tighten to 12 ft. lbs. Install four new O-rings onto the timing chain case cover.
   18. Apply continuous beads of seal packing, part number 08826-00080 or equivalent.
       
       NOTE

       Remove any oil from the contact surfaces. Install the timing chain case cover within three minutes and tighten the bolts within fifteen minutes of applying the seal packing. Do not start the engine for at least four hours after installation of the cover.
   19. Align the oil pump drive rotor spline and the crankshaft. Install the spline and timing chain case cover onto the crankshaft.
   20. Loosely install the timing chain case cover retaining bolts and nuts.
       
       NOTE

       If the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning install the bolts that hold the idle pulley bracket in place when installing the idle pulley, as they are for this purpose.
   21. Fully tighten the bolts and nuts, except bolts -A- in the following order: Area 1, Area 3 and then Area 2 to 15 ft. lbs.
   22. Fully tighten the bolts -A- in the following order: Area 2 and then Area 3 to 34 ft. lbs.
   23. Fully tighten the bolts -E- in Area 4 to 15 ft. lbs.
   24. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
   25. When installing the cylinder head cover, apply seal packing, part number 08826-00080 or equivalent, to the cylinder head. Provisionally install the cylinder head cover bolts and nuts. Tighten bolts -A- to 80 inch lbs. Tighten bolts -B- to 80 inch lbs. Retighten bolts -A- to 80 inch lbs.
       
       NOTE

       Be sure to remove any oil from the contact surfaces of the cylinder head cover and the cylinder head. Install the cover within three minutes after applying the seal packing. Do not add engine oil for at least two hours after installing the cover.
   26. Be sure to fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine coolant.
   27. Be sure to fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine oil.
   28. Start the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
