The Throttle Body Removing Procedure with complete details and diagrams.
The procedure will cover
Toyota Camry/Avalon 1997-2000.
Avalon, Camry & Camry Solara car models.
Throttle Body Removal and installation details are as follows:----
5S-FE Engine
1MZ-FE Engine
Please Take CAUTION
Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around fuel. Whenever servicing the fuel system, always work in a well ventilated area. Do not allow fuel spray or vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher near the work area. Always keep fuel in a container specifically designed for fuel storage; also, always properly seal fuel containers to avoid the possibility of fire or explosion.

Throttle Body Removal and installation details are as follows:----
5S-FE Engine
- Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain the engine coolant.
- Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle linkage. If equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect the throttle cable from the linkage.
- Remove the air cleaner cap, resonator and hose.
- Label and disconnect the PCV and vacuum hoses from the throttle body.
- Disconnect the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve connector.
- Remove the retaining bolts holding the throttle body.
- Remove the throttle body and its gasket.
- Detach the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) gas temperature sensor bracket.
- Remove the coolant by-pass hoses and air hose after the throttle body is partially removed.
- Clean the cast parts of the throttle body using a bristle brush and carburetor cleaner. Do not expose the throttle position sensor or other external components to the solvent. Use compressed air to clean and dry all passages in the throttle body.
To install:
- Connect the coolant by-pass hoses and the air hose to the throttle body before installation.
- Place a new gasket on the intake manifold. The gasket is correctly installed in only one position: the protrusion or bulge in the gasket must face downward. Install the throttle body, tightening the retaining nuts and bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
NOTE
The bolts must be installed correctly; the upper bolts are shorter than the lowers.
- Connect the PCV and vacuum hoses to the throttle body.
- Install the alternator, distributor and attach the front pipe to the catalyst if separated.
- Attach the wiring connectors to the TPS and ISC valve.
- Install the air cleaner cap and hose assembly.
- Install and adjust the throttle cable and/or accelerator cable.
- Refill the engine coolant. Connect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine, check for operation and top off the coolant level.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain the engine coolant.
- Remove the air cleaner cap assembly.
- Disconnect the accelerator cable. In automatic transaxles, disconnect the throttle body cable.
- On the Avalon, remove the throttle cable.
- Disconnect the three upper throttle body vacuum hoses. There are markings on the top of the throttle body to identify each one of these.
- On the Avalon, remove the air cleaner hose.
- Disconnect the TPS and IAC wiring.
- Remove the linkage bracket attached to the side of the throttle body.
- On the Avalon, remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensor wiring connector.
- Loosen and remove the four throttle body retaining bolts and nuts. Pull the throttle body out slightly, then disconnect the hoses attached to the bottom of the IAC. Discard the throttle body gasket.
To install:
- Using a new gasket, install the throttle body and tighten the mounting bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
- Connect the vacuum hoses, the air tube hose, the coolant by-pass hoses, and the PCV hose.
- Attach the wiring connectors to the throttle position sensor and ISC valve.
- Install the air cleaner intake hose.
- Install and adjust the throttle cable if it was disconnected. Install and adjust the accelerator cable.
- Refill the coolant.
